Astronomer-turned-filmmaker strives to ignite an interest in space [PDF]
For scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, the night of January 3, 2004 entailed six minutes of nerve-wracking terror. Around 8:30 PM Pacific Time, the Spirit rover began its plunge to the Martian surface, as an audience of engineers and others—temporarily unable to receive any communication from the craft—waited anxiously to ...

Astronomical archives and their importance for knowledge transfer in Basic Space Science
We summarize the nature of modern astronomical archives with special reference to spectroscopic data archives and illustrate in which ways archives can play a role in the accelerated development of Basic Space Sciences in the developing countries. Some of the conflicting issues in the current planning of archives are addressed.

Space Science: Ultraviolet astronomers look to space [PDF]
Astronomers have been peering into the future to see what space missions they will need in ten years' time. At a meeting in Boulder, Colorado, last month, more than 120 researchers concluded that four ultraviolet and optical instruments will have to be launched when the Hubble Space Telescope stops taking data early next century.

Space Science: Astronomers fly higher and smaller [PDF]
Two observational techniques recently pioneered in the US have strengthened space scientists' ability to carry out their vocation. One involves the use of high-performance jet aircraft as platforms for astronomy. The other uses minuscule satellites to undertake a variety of near-Earth observations.
