Elucidating the Role of Surface Ligands on the Oxidative Etching of Au Bipyramids During Photothermia Using Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Gold bipyramids can act as efficient plasmonic nanoheaters, but they often reshape during laser heating. This study shows that oxygen nanobubbles drive oxidative etching and that surface ligands control stability. CTAB‐ and citrate‐coated particles blunt and lose optical performance, whereas polystyrene sulfonate preserves shape and heating by ...

Back-illuminated Light-spot-mapping Algorithm for Dual Rotation Robotic Fiber Positioners Based on an Artificial Probability Potential Field Method

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Back-illuminated spot mapping is essential for observations with modern spectroscopic survey telescopes. In the fiber position detection system, after the fiber view camera (FVC) detects the positions of the light spots from the robotic fiber positioners

Small Solutions to the Large Telescope Problem: A Massively Replicated MEMS Spectrograph

open access: yes, 2008
In traditional seeing-limited observations the spectrograph aperture scales with telescope aperture, driving sizes and costs to enormous proportions. We propose a new solution to the seeing-limited spectrograph problem.

Asymmetry of the Ferroelectric Phase Transition in BaTiO3

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Phase transitions are typically assumed to behave identically in forward and reverse. This work shows that in the ferroelectric material barium titanate this is not true: heating drives an abrupt, first‐order jump, while cooling gives a smooth, continuous change.
