We present a detailed quantum-statistical model of multimode far-infrared and submillimeter-wave astronomical interferometers. The scheme identifies explicitly the optical modes associated with each telescope and uses these to trace the quantum-statistical properties of the field from a source through the telescopes, through the beam combiners, and ...

Development of bolometric astronomical interferometer in mm and submm bands
2005 Joint 30th International Conference on Infrared and Millimeter Waves and 13th International Conference on Terahertz Electronics, 2006We are developing a bolometric astronomical interferometer in mm and submm wave bands by applying Martin-Puplett type Fourier transform spectrometer to aperture synthesis technique. Since the spectroscopically resolved intensity distribution of four Stokes parameters are measurable by this instrument, we refer this to multi-components Fourier transform

Interferometer-grating spectrograph for high resolution astronomical spectroscopy in the middle uv
Applied Optics, 1978A high resolution spectrograph is described, which is to be used for a program of uv astronomical spectroscopy from a moderately stabilized, star pointing balloon-borne platform. A spectral resolving power >10(5) is achieved using an optically contacted Fabry-Perot interferometer in crossed dispersion with a grating order sorter.

A Michelson interferometer for high resolution (lambda/Deltalambda approximately 10(4)) spectroscopic observations of astronomical ir ionic line emission has been built and flown on the NASA 91-cm airborne ir telescope facility (G. P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory).

Blind operation of optical astronomical interferometers options and predicted performance
Experimental Astronomy, 1991Maximum sensitivity for optical interferometers is achieved only when the optical pathlengths between the different arms can be equalized without using interference fringes on the research object itself. This is called “blind operation” of the interferometer. In this paper I examine different options to achieve this, focussing on the application to the

A Michelson interferometer has been built for use with the 91-cm telescope on NASA's Gerard P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory primarily to measure ir line emission from H 11 regions. Operation is in the rapid scan mode, and the achievable resolution is 0.02 cm(-1) in the wavelength range from 10 micro to around 300 micro. A minicomputer is used to provide

Advances in broadband-integrated optic beam combiners for mid-IR astronomical interferometers
SPIE Proceedings, 2017Photonic technology has pushed the limits of astronomy ever more in recent years. Especially, integrated optics (IO) has led to new standards in accuracy and stability in the field of astronomical interferometry where several beams need to be coherently and simultaneously combined.

Towards an ultrafast laser inscribed astronomical nulling interferometer in the mid-infrared
2017 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe & European Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/Europe-EQEC), 2017One of the biggest challenges in modem Astronomy is the direct detection of extrasolar planets using ground based telescopes. While the small angular separation of the star-planet system is an unchangeable limitation, the contrast ratio can dramatically be improved by shifting the observing wavelength to the mid-infrared. In the astronomical L'-band (3.

A procedure is described for simulating the behavior of multimode, bolometric, astronomical interferometers. The procedure relies on the use of singular value decomposition to determine the fields on the sky and the fields at the detectors to which the individual elements of an interferometer can couple. The scheme can be used with any configuration of

The first astronomical mm and submm observations with multi-Fourier transform interferometer
2005 Joint 30th International Conference on Infrared and Millimeter Waves and 13th International Conference on Terahertz Electronics, 2006We report a success of the first astronomical mm and submm observations with multi-Fourier transform interferometer (MuFT). Several merits of MuFT are presented using the observational and experimental results. In this paper, the preliminary results are also shown.
