X- and Gamma-ray Studies of Cas A: Exposing Core Collapse to the Core

open access: yes, 2003
In this review of X-ray and gamma-ray observations of Cas A, evidence is discussed that Cas A was a Type Ib supernova of a Wolf-Rayet star with a main sequence mass between 22-25 Msun, that exploded after stellar wind loss had reduced its mass to ~6 Msun.

Fractional Skyrmion Tubes in Chiral‐Interfaced 3D Magnetic Nanowires

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In chiral 3D helical magnetic nanowires, the coupling between the geometric and magnetic chirality provides a way to create topological spin states like vortex tubes. Here, it is demonstrated how the breaking of this coupling in interfaced 3D nanowires of opposite chirality leads to even more complex topological spin states, such as fractional ...

Astronomy and astrology [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2009
AbstractAstrology meets a large success in our societies, from the private to the political sphere as well as in the media, in spite of the demonstrated inaccuracy of its psychological as well as operational predictions. We analyse here the relations between astrology and astronomy, as well as the criticisms opposed by the latter to the former. We show

Fast Neutron Detector Based on Hybrid 2D Perovskite Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents the direct detection of fast neutrons using flexible hybrid 2D perovskite (PEA2PbBr4) thin‐film detectors. Thanks to their high low‐Z elements content and good charge transport, these materials enable efficient neutron detection. The thin film configuration allowed the operation at low voltage, and offer scalability, flexibility, and

Innovative practices in astronomy science education in China – A case study of BJP's science communication activities

open access: yesOpen Astronomy
As China’s only non-core K-12 science subject, astronomy education faces resource constraints. Beijing Planetarium (BJP), home to the Chinese Astronomical Society Popularization Committee, addresses this through tiered programs.

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
(a) Conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) image of the initial state bidomain structure of the Al0.85Sc0.15N (a) showing an enhanced conductivity of the head‐to‐head domain boundary. (b) CAFM image of the same area after application of several −65 V, 1 s voltage pulses showing lower conductivity of the generated tail‐to‐tail domain walls.
