Statistical data analysis for gamma-ray astronomy
Experimental Astronomy, 1990Significance testing, parameter estimation and sensitivity calculations for γ-ray telescopes are discussed for single ‘on-off” astronomical observations. Four widely used significance test methods are examined by Monte-Carlo simulations. The Maximum Likelihood Ratio Method is found to consistently over-estimate the significance of an observation by a ...

Efficient Attribute-Based Data Access in Astronomy Analysis
2012 SC Companion: High Performance Computing, Networking Storage and Analysis, 2012Large experiments and high-performance computer models generate many petabytes of data. While Cloud Computing systems may meet the needs for analyzing these petabytes by harnessing the computing power of many distributed computers, the key challenge in effectively utilizing such a distributed system is the data management process, including storage ...

Data analysis techniques for UHE acoustic astronomy
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2009Abstract Using acoustic techniques, it is hoped that a new type of telescope can be developed to search for ultra high energy (UHE) ( > 10 20 eV ) neutrinos. Using an eight hydrophone array, ACoRNE is investigating the practicality of such an acoustic telescope.

Stochastic data in astronomy: Fourier analysis of highly nonuniform time series
Astrophysics, 2005The features of the CLEAN algorithm for Fourier analysis of time series with data separated by long pauses are analyzed in detail. Estimates are obtained for the limits of variability of the parameters of harmonic components that can be determined on a specified time grid.

Hypercube data analysis in astronomy: optical interferometry and millisecond pulsar searches
Proceedings of the third conference on Hypercube concurrent computers and applications -, 1988Astronomical data sets are beginning to live up to their name, in both their sizes and the complexity of the analysis required. Here we discuss two astronomical data analysis problems which we have begun to implement on a hypercube concurrent processor environment: The intensive image processing required in an optical interferometry project, and the ...
