Software package for nautical astronomy

Journal of Navigation
Abstract The article is devoted to the mathematical theories and algorithms necessary for the implementation of a software package that fully automates the calculations necessary in Nautical Astronomy. The article describes a method for calculating the equatorial and horizontal coordinates of the celestial bodies at any moment of time.

The Future of Software Systems for Astronomy

2013
What does the future hold for software systems for astronomy? Will the demand continue to rise for software tailored to ground-based observatories (e.g., AO software); or will it retreat? Will the promise of “software engineering” keep software projects on schedule and improve the end product? What market movers (gaming? social networking? smart phones?

Senior capstone: A software defined radio design for amateur astronomy

2013 3rd Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Education Conference, 2013
This paper describes a unique interdisciplinary Senior Design Capstone project to design and implement a Software Defined Radio (SDR) receiver that emulates the hardware-based NASA-specified Radio JOVE system. Radio JOVE receivers are used by amateur astronomers to detect and record Jovian radiation and solar radiation from the sun over the decametric ...

Revisiting software specification and design for large astronomy projects

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
The separation of science and engineering in the delivery of software systems overlooks the true nature of the problem being solved and the organization that will solve it. Use of a systems engineering approach to managing the requirements flow between these two groups as between a customer and contractor has been used with varying degrees of success ...

Enabling technologies and constraints for software sharing in large astronomy projects

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
The new observatories currently being built, upgraded or designed represent a big step up in terms of complexity (laser guide star, adaptive optics, 30/40m class telescopes) with respect to the previous generation of ground-based telescopes. Moreover, the high cost of observing time imposes challenging requirements on system reliability and observing

The Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite Attitude Control Software Design

1995
The Submilimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) was selected for flight by NASA in 1989 as a part of the Small Explorer (SMEX) program. SWAS's primary science objective is to conduct high spectral resolution surveys of galactic molecular clouds. The SWAS Attitude Control System (ACS) is three-axis controlled, zero momentum stabilized, and is capable ...

Mid-Infrared Astronomy with the E-ELT: Data Reduction Software for METIS

Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series, 2017
We present an overview of the on- and off-line data reduction pipeline to produce science ready data as well as quality control parameters for METIS. The paper summarizes the current status of our efforts in this project and highlights the particular challenges of developing a robust and versatile data reduction environment for an instrument of a 40 ...

An Overview of the Digitized Astronomy Supernovae Search Control and Image Processing Software

1988
A 75-cm telescope has been automated with a Prime 300 minicomputer to search approximately 250 galaxies per hour for premaxima supernovae. The telescope operates completely automatically and without a human operator. The computer handles all aspects of the search including startup and shutdown, weather monitoring, object scheduling, and the generation ...
