We present an experimental characterization of jet propagation in an ambient medium. An intense laser (LULI2000) was used to generate the plasma jet using foam filled cone target. We observed, with several diagnostics, a perturbation in the interaction region between the jet and the ambient medium.

Astrophysical jets are linear structures associated with stars and galaxies which span about seven orders of magnitude in size; the largest jets emanating from galaxies are about 100 times the size of our galaxy and are the largest single objects in the universe.

My subject is a topic in astrophysical fluid dynamics; specifically, the behavior of the supersonic jets that are observed to squirt out of the nuclei of active galaxies, compact stellar objects, and proto-stars. Some years ago, I had the good fortune to discuss this topic with Hans Liepmann, who quickly recognized that astrophysical jets pose some ...

Helically symmetric astrophysical jets
Physical Review E, 2000Astrophysical jets are modeled outside of their accretion disks by the helically symmetric MHD equilibria. The derived equilibria are smooth, have no current sheets, and no discontinuities. The obtained exact solutions to the MHD equilibrium equations generalize the Chandrasekhar equipartition solution and depend upon two arbitrary functions, alpha(psi)

Astrophysical Jets as Exact Plasma Equilibria
Physical Review Letters, 2000Two families of exact global solutions to the equations of plasma equilibrium are derived. The solutions model astrophysical jets and solar prominences and provide counterexamples to Parker's hypothesis.

Laboratory models for astrophysical jets
Journal de Physique IV (Proceedings), 2006In this paper we will discuss possible links between astrophysical models and observations, with several recent laboratory astrophysics experiments [4-10] performed on laser and pulsed-power facilities which are aimed at tackling some of the issues relevant to jets associated with young stellar objects.
