Astrophysical jets are spectacular displays of gas or dust ejected from a range of cosmic bodies; they are seemingly ubiquitous on scales from comets to black holes. This volume reviews our understanding of jet processes and provides a modern guide to their observation and the role they play in many long-standing problems in astrophysics. It covers the

Instabilities in Astrophysical Jets
1983Instabilities in astrophysical jets are studied in the nonlinear regime by performing 2D numerical classical gasdynamical calculations. Two kinds of instabilities are studied: (1) Those which arise from unsteadiness in output from the central engine feeding the jets, and (2) Those which arise from a beam in a turbulent surrounding.

Jets in Astrophysics: A Review
Chinese Journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2003We discuss observations used to infer the presence of accretion disks in astrophysical sources and the disks' association with evidence for astrophysical jets. We highlight some important results from past and current literature that show parallels between the temporal behavior of an active galaxy (NGC 5128) and a galactic microquasar (GRS 1915+105 ...

Abstract Hydrodynamical wind-type jets emanated from the funnel formed by an accretion torus account well for the velocity field and temperature distribution of the SS 433 jets obtained by recent X-ray and optical observations. The jets attain their terminal velocity before exiting the funnel—the confinement region—and have constant ...

Geometrical Simulations of Astrophysical Jets
1988The observed morphological features of extragalactic radio jets and H.H objects include wiggles and pinches. To gain understanding of these properties, we review the model of helical and pinching instabilities. This model enable us to reproduce these features and to deduce a number of important physical parameters, such as the Mach number and the ...

Particle Acceleration in Astrophysical jets
1987The different mechanisms for the acceleration of particles in astrophysical jets are discussed. The formation of power-law particle distributions is considered by the processes of Fermi acceleration, gyro-resonant acceleration and shock acceleration.
