Microphysics of Particle Reflection in Weibel-mediated Shocks

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations have shown that relativistic collisionless shocks mediated by the Weibel instability accelerate ∼1% of incoming particles, while the majority are transmitted through the shock and become thermalized.

Laboratory evidence of confinement and acceleration of wide-angle flows by toroidal magnetic fields

open access: yesCommunications Physics
Astrophysical jets play crucial roles in star formation and transporting angular momentum away from accretion discs, however, their collimation mechanism is still a subject of much debate due to the limitations of astronomical observational techniques ...

The Effect of Spatially Varying Collision Frequency on the Development of the Rayleigh–Taylor Instability

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability is ubiquitously observed, yet has traditionally been studied using ideal fluid models. Collisionality can vary strongly across the fluid interface, and previous work demonstrates the necessity of kinetic models to ...
