Introduction to nuclear astrophysics

open access: yes, 2009
In the first lecture of this volume, we will present the basic fundamental ideas regarding nuclear processes occurring in stars. We start from stellar observations, will then elaborate on some important quantum-mechanical phenomena governing nuclear ...

Astrophysics in 1997 [PDF]

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1998
Martian marvels, a gamma-ray burster with a redshift, Galileo converses with Ganymede, a record galactic redshift of 4.92, and much else. Fiscal 1997 was definitely an exciting year for astronomers. We have tried hard to hit all the obvious highlights, but also to report more gradual progress on traditional problems of understanding planets, stars ...

Influence of Low Magnetic Fields on Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance of NiCoP Electrocatalysts

open access: yesChemPhysChem, EarlyView.
Herein, electrocatalytic activity enhancement is reported of NiCoP nanorods by applying an external magnetic field. The NiCoP nanorods exhibit an overpotential of 100 mV at 10 mA cm−2 without magnetic field. However, under low magnetic field of 2000 G, the overpotential reduces to 62 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, demonstrating that external magnetic

Problems in Astrophysics [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1903
THE triple alliance of astronomy, physics and chemistry has extended the boundaries of each in unexpected directions. Astronomy is no longer a dependency of mathematics, but an independent power having a high place in the hierarchy of the physical sciences; instruments of research in physics have been turned from earth to sky, and chemistry now looks ...

Astrophysics in 1998 [PDF]

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1999
From Alpha (Orionis and the parameter in mixing-length theory) to Omega (Centauri and the density of the universe), the Greeks had a letter for it. In between, we look at the Sun and planets, some very distant galaxies and nearby stars, neutrinos, gamma rays, and some of the anomalies that arise in a very large universe being studied by roughly one ...

Temperature‐Dependent Kinetics of Plasma‐Based CO2 Conversion: Interplay of Electron‐Driven and Thermal‐Driven Chemistry

open access: yesChemSusChem, Volume 18, Issue 6, March 15, 2025.
The transformation of CO2 into chemical building blocks is essential for a net‐zero energy future. Plasma‐chemical processing offers promising potential to achieve this. Here, we explore a temperature‐dependent plasma‐chemical reaction mechanism, revealing a shift from electron‐driven to thermal‐driven CO2 conversion regimes.

Nuclear astrophysics studies with ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions

open access: yes, 2009
I describe in very simple terms the theoretical tools needed to investigate ultra-peripheral nuclear reactions for nuclear astrophysics purposes. For a more detailed account, see arXiv:0908.4307.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, Lecture notes presented at ...

Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND): Observational Phenomenology and Relativistic Extensions

open access: yesLiving Reviews in Relativity, 2012
A wealth of astronomical data indicate the presence of mass discrepancies in the Universe. The motions observed in a variety of classes of extragalactic systems exceed what can be explained by the mass visible in stars and gas. Either (i) there is a vast

Short Wavelength Limit of the Dynamic Matsubara Local Field Correction

open access: yesContributions to Plasma Physics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We investigate the short wavelength limit of the dynamic Matsubara local field correction G˜q,zl$$ \tilde{G}\left(\mathbf{q},{z}_l\right) $$ of the uniform electron gas based on direct ab initio path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) results over an unprecedented range of wavenumbers, q≲20qF$$ q\lesssim 20{q}_{\mathrm{F}} $$, where qF$$ {q}_{\mathrm{

Exploring acknowledgement practices in English-medium astrophysics research papers: Implications on authorship

open access: yesRevista de Lenguas para Fines Específicos, 2015
This article reports the findings of a diachronic study of acknowledgement practices in 300 randomly collected research papers published during three different periods (1998, 2004 and 2012) in the most prestigious American and European astrophysics ...
