Breakthrough Capability for the NASA Astrophysics Explorer Program: Reaching the Darkest Sky [PDF]

open access: yes
We describe a mission architecture designed to substantially increase the science capability of the NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Astrophysics Explorer Program for all AO proposers working within the near-UV to far-infrared spectrum.

Balancing Practical Uses and Ethical Concerns:The Role of Large Language Models in Scientific Research

open access: yesPerspectives of Earth and Space Scientists, Volume 6, Issue 1, December 2025.
Abstract The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific research is accelerating progress but also challenging core scientific norms such as accountability, transparency, and replicability. Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT are revolutionizing scientific communication and problem‐solving, but they introduce complexities ...

Earth-like Habitats in Planetary Systems

open access: yes, 2014
Understanding the concept of habitability is related to an evolutionary knowledge of the particular planet-in-question. Additional indications so-called "systemic aspects" of the planetary system as a whole governs a particular planet's claim on ...

Clumpy Flows in Protoplanetary and Planetary Nebulae [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2003
Many astrophysical flows occur in inhomogeneous media. We briefly discuss some general properties of the adiabatic and radiative inhomogeneous systems and discuss the relevance of those properties to the planetary nebulae systems. We then focus on radiative hypersonic bullets and the applicability of this model to planetary and protoplanetary systems ...

The Once and Future Hydrology Is Whole Earth Hydrology

open access: yesPerspectives of Earth and Space Scientists, Volume 6, Issue 1, December 2025.
Abstract We here argue for a new paradigm to advance pursuit of truth in global freshwater science. Our proposed Whole Earth Hydrology is hydrology that is explicitly empirical and discovery‐based, grounded in primary data, detailed at scale, and incorporates humans as essential.

Microlensing path parametrization for Earth-like Exoplanet detection around solar mass stars

open access: yes, 2018
We propose a new parametrization of the impact parameter u0 and impact angle {\alpha} for microlensing systems composed by an Earth-like Exoplanet around a Solar mass Star at 1 AU.

Maser emission in planetary nebulae [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2008
Stars at the top of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) can exhibit maser emission from molecules like SiO, H2O and OH. As the star evolves to the planetary nebula phase, mass-loss stops and ionization of the envelope begins, making the masers disappear progressively.

A Small Pathbreaking Spacecraft: Giants of Space Research (Bernard Blake, Dieter Hovestadt, and Edward Stone)

open access: yesPerspectives of Earth and Space Scientists, Volume 6, Issue 1, December 2025.
Abstract The Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Explorer (SAMPEX) mission launched in July 1992 was the first NASA “Small Explorer” project. It had the goal to show how space missions could be developed much more rapidly than had become the situation in the 1980s and 1990s.

Instabilities and the Formation of Small-Scale Structures in Planetary Nebulae [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1999
Recent observations have revealed the presence of a variety of small-scale ``micro-structures'' in Planetary Nebulae images. I discuss numerical hydrodynamics models of planetaries and outline the formation and growth of instabilities that may be seen in these models.
