Morfologia e desenvolvimento do núcleo vitelínico do lambari Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Osteichthyes, Characidae) [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zoologia, 1990
A morphological study of the yolk nucleus in previtellogenic oocytes from A. bimacularus has been carried out. Six phases of development were described from its formation closed to the oocyte nucleus to its dispersion in the periferic ooplasm. Histochemical techniques indicate proteins, lipids and RNA in the yolk nucleus of A.

Insect meals in fish nutrition

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 11, Issue 4, Page 1080-1103, November 2019., 2019
Abstract Different studies have shown that insect meals can partially or completely replace the fish and soya bean meals that are commonly used in aquaculture. However, information is lacking on the amino acid and fatty acid contents and digestibility of different insect meals. Moreover, we evaluated different proportions of insect diets and determined

Isozymes of malate-and lactate dehydrogenase of Astyanax bimaculatus as biomarkers of environmental impact [PDF]

open access: yesAmbiente e Agua - An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science, 2019
The activity of certain isozymes may serve as biomarkers of specific physiological conditions of living organisms. The present work aimed to evaluate malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isozymes from the hepatic, branchial and renal tissues of the fish Astyanax bimaculatus as biochemical markers of environmental changes in the ...

Trends in Medicinal Uses of Edible Wild Vertebrates in Brazil

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
The use of food medicines is a widespread practice worldwide. In Brazil, such use is often associated with wild animals, mostly focusing on vertebrate species. Here we assessed taxonomic and ecological trends in traditional uses of wild edible vertebrates in the country, through an extensive ethnobiological database analysis. Our results showed that at

Restoration Effects of the Riparian Forest on the Intertidal Fish Fauna in an Urban Area of the Amazon River

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
Urbanization causes environmental impacts that threaten the health of aquatic communities and alter their recovery patterns. In this study, we evaluated the diversity of intertidal fish in six areas affected by urbanization (areas with native vegetation, deforested areas, and areas in process of restoration of vegetation) along an urban waterfront in ...

Using Gap Visualization to Navigate Multivariate Metabarcode Data, Select Primer Pairs, and Enhance Reference Data Quality

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 6, Issue 6, November–December 2024.
We introduce the metabarcoding gap visualization and demonstrated how it can make comparisons of PCR primers rapidly comprehensible for researchers in the molecular ecology community. We use gap visualization to simultaneously interrogate multiple primer pairs and enhance reference data quality. This has significant impact for study design as selecting

Wild Animals Used as Food Medicine in Brazil

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
The connection between eating and healing is common in traditional folk medical systems, and the multiple possibilities resulting from the combination of biodiversity and culture confer a wealth and complexity in terms of knowledge of the flora and fauna as to their potential as food medicine.

River Geomorphology and Fish Diversity Around the Manseriche Gorge, the Last Andean Crossing Is in Peril

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 60, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract The transition from the Andes to the Amazon lowland hosts a high biodiversity and currently is facing several anthropogenic activities, including hydropower infrastructure projects. Little is known about the geomorphology of the Andean gorges, rivers and the interaction with the fish diversity upstream and downstream of gorges.

Ichthyofauna Used in Traditional Medicine in Brazil

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Fish represent the group of vertebrates with the largest number of species and the largest geographic distribution; they are also used in different ways by modern civilizations. The goal of this study was to compile the current knowledge on the use of ichthyofauna in zootherapeutic practices in Brazil, including ecological and conservational commentary
