Laser‐Synthesized Amorphous PdSe2‐x Nanoparticles: A Defect‐Rich Platform for High‐Efficiency SERS, Photocatalysis, and Photothermal Conversion

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Using femtosecond ablation, we show that an ordered, stoichiometric crystalline PdSe2 target can be controllably converted into a stable, disordered, non‐stoichiometric, and highly functional amorphous nanomaterial, PdSe2−x${\rm PdSe}_{2-x}$. The obtained nanoparticles offer significant advantages over conventional planar plasmon‐free substrates due to

Non-markovian mesoscopic dissipative dynamics of open quantum spin chains

open access: yes, 2016
We study the dissipative dynamics of $N$ quantum spins with Lindblad generator consisting of operators scaling as fluctuations, namely with the inverse square-root of $N$.

Estimating persistence in the volatility of asset returns with signal plus noise models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper examines the degree of persistence in the volatility of financial time series using a Long Memory Stochastic Volatility (LMSV) model. Specifically, it employs a Gaussian semiparametric (or local Whittle) estimator of the memory parameter ...

Flexible, Integrated‐Porous Microneedle Sensor for Biofluid Sampling and On‐Site Biomarker Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A paper‐integrated porous PGA microneedle array patch capable of both high strength and absorption capacity is proposed. With an image‐processing system, an optimized colorimetric sensor achieves a low limit of detection of 0.09 mm in cholesterol.

Distributed Bragg Reflector Based on Plasmonic Ag: Plasma Polymer Nanocomposites

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This paper presents a comprehensive approach for the optical design and validation of silver nanocomposite‐based Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBRs). It describes deriving material properties (n, k) and using them to predict the performance of the deposited optical stack, as well as to characterize imperfections in the DBR deposition, or even to ...

Transport and fluctuation-dissipation relations in asymptotic and pre-asymptotic diffusion across channels with variable section

open access: yes, 2014
We study the asymptotic and pre-asymptotic diffusive properties of Brownian particles in channels whose section varies periodically in space. The effective diffusion coefficient $D_{\mathrm{eff}}$ is numerically determined by the asymptotic behavior of ...

Unlocking the THz Emission Potential of Sputtered Germanium Thin Films Through Structural and Optoelectronic Properties Optimization

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
An optimized RF‐sputtering process is developed for the deposition of n‐doped germanium thin films exhibiting strongly enhanced THz emission under fs‐laser excitation. By tuning deposition temperature and thickness, highly (111)‐oriented films with an effective bandgap of ∼0.77 eV and improved optoelectronic properties are achieved, leading to a ∼35 ...

Reaction-diffusion with a time-dependent reaction rate: the single-species diffusion-annihilation process

open access: yes, 2004
We study the single-species diffusion-annihilation process with a time-dependent reaction rate, lambda(t)=lambda_0 t^-omega. Scaling arguments show that there is a critical value of the decay exponent omega_c(d) separating a reaction-limited regime for ...

Backpropagation Through Soft Body: Investigating Information Processing in Brain–Body Coupling Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This study explores how information processing is distributed between brains and bodies through a codesign approach. Using the “backpropagation through soft body” framework, brain–body coupling agents are developed and analyzed across several tasks in which output is generated through the agents’ physical dynamics.

Limiting distributions for explosive PAR(1) time series with strongly mixing innovation

open access: yes, 2015
This work deals with the limiting distribution of the least squares estimators of the coefficients a r of an explosive periodic autoregressive of order 1 (PAR(1)) time series X r = a r X r--1 +u r when the innovation {u k } is strongly mixing.
