Occurrence and Levels of Glyphosate, Chlorate and Perchlorate in Irish Drinking Water: A Pilot Study

open access: yesWater and Environment Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Safe drinking water is a crucial component of public health. Pesticides and disinfection byproducts are known pollutants of concern. This study aimed to investigate the levels of the herbicide glyphosate and disinfection byproducts in Irish drinking water.

Transitory microbial habitat in the hyperarid Atacama Desert [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2018
Significance It has remained an unresolved question whether microorganisms recovered from the most arid environments on Earth are thriving under such extreme conditions or are just dead or dying vestiges of viable cells fortuitously deposited by atmospheric processes.

11-Hydroxy-7-Methoxy-2,8-Dimethyltetracene-5,12-Dione

open access: yesMolbank
Microorganisms are a valuable source of pharmaceutically active chemicals, serving as scaffolds for synthesis as well as lead structures. Investigating novel biomes frequently yields intriguing chemistry; the Atacama Desert in Chile is one such example ...

Elevational variation in heart mass and suppression of hypoxia‐induced right ventricle hypertrophy in Andean leaf‐eared mice (Phyllotis)

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend In lowland mammals that ascend to high elevation, hypoxia‐induced changes in the pulmonary circulation can give rise to hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH) and associated right‐ventricle (RV) hypertrophy. Andean mice with broad elevational ranges have greater heart mass relative to body size at higher elevations, but they ...

Empowering teachers and fostering pupil climate action in Welsh primary schools

open access: yesThe Curriculum Journal, Volume 37, Issue 3, Page 656-675, September 2026.
Abstract The Curriculum for Wales intends to help students understand and address climate change, but relies on teachers' knowledge and implementation thereof. This article focuses on “The Lifecycle of My Clothes”, a unit of work (UoW) developed by academics and practitioners. The UoW aimed to increase students' awareness of the environmental impact of

Developing Nomad for robotic exploration of the Atacama Desert [PDF]

open access: yesRobotics and Autonomous Systems, 1999
Recent years have seen renewed attention to planetary exploration, and robotics is recognized as essential to many upcoming missions. In this article we describe the ongoing efforts of the Nomad project to develop robots for planetary and terrestrial exploration. The project is developing, demonstrating, and evaluating systems capable of long-distance,

Linking Biocrust Architecture and Dispersal: Reproductive Ecology of Lichens of the Grit Crust in the Coastal Atacama Desert

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 4, August 2026.
Microscopic analysis of Atacama Desert grit crust revealed a sequential assembly process in which airborne fungal spores of the Caliciaceae colonise quartz particles before encountering compatible Trebouxia photobionts. Free‐living algal cells on grit surfaces function as environmental reservoirs for symbiosis initiation, while multiple wind‐driven ...

An Atacama subsurface tephra layer reveals how life colonized Kenorland in the Neoarchean

open access: yesScientific Reports
Much has been published on the microbiology of the Atacama Desert, the driest and oldest place on Earth, but little is known about how microbial life is able to permanently colonize this extremely harsh environment.

Atomic Layer Deposition Processes: Versatile Platforms for Engineering ZnO‐Chitosan Biointerfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 15, Issue 26, 10 July 2026.
Vapour phase metalation (VPM), multiplied pulsed vapour phase infiltration (MPI), and O2 plasma‑enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) tailor Zn–chitosan (Zn‑CS) films. PEALD improves wettability and biocompatibility. MPI enhances semiconductor behavior. Antiseptic selectivity: VPM → E. coli; MPI → H. pylori.
