A Supplemental Sampling Method for Estuarine Ichthyoplankton with Emphasis on the Atherinidae

A three-stage sampler, filtering water from the 0–5 cm, 5–25 cm, and 25–45 cm microhorizons was tested during conventional ichthyoplankton studies. The sampler was as much as 240X more efficient than 0.5 m nets in the collection of larval atherinids.

Abstract Menidia audens were introduced into Upper and Lower Blue Lakes, and in Clear Lake, Lake County, during the fall of 1967, as a result of previous study indicating a high potential for this species as a biological control agent for aquatic midges, and as a forage species for game fishes.
