Abstract Aim Conservation efforts have traditionally addressed the threat of biodiversity loss by prioritizing regions and habitats with high endemic species richness. However, species‐poor habitats often harbour distinct, valuable and/or functionally unique species that contribute to regional diversity.

Recent trends in abundance and fishing pressure of agency‐assessed small pelagic fish stocks
Abstract Small pelagic fishes are used for human consumption, fishmeal and fish oil. They constitute 25% of global fish catch and have been of considerable conservation concern because of their intermediate position in aquatic food webs, often being a dominant dietary component of marine predators. This paper provides an overview of trends in abundance

The distribution of estuarine fish larvae: nutritional condition and co-occurrence with predators and prey [PDF]
Fish larvae were collected monthly between March and September 1997 in the Mira and Guadiana estuaries (southern Portugal). Hydrological parameters were registered and zooplankton samples were obtained simultaneously. Densities of fish larvae (ind.100 m(-

Predatory fish diets shift towards an invasive mullet in a traditional Hawaiian aquaculture system
Traditional Hawaiian fishponds are an important aquaculture resource, yet the fish populations within them remain woefully understudied. The results of our research show that the dominant predatory fish species do not prey upon the herbivorous fish typically raised in these systems, but have added an invasive fish species to their diets.

Abstract Trait‐based models of ecological communities and ecosystem functioning often fail to account for intraspecific variation in functional traits, assuming that intraspecific variability is negligible compared with interspecific variability. However, this assumption remains poorly tested across vertebrate animals where past studies routinely ...

Evolution of an All-Female Fish, Menidia clarkhubbsi (Atherinidae) [PDF]
Menidia clarkhubbsi, an all-female atherinid fish, was recently discovered on the Gulf Coast of Texas where it coexists with two similar, bisexual (=gonochoristic herein) species, M. beryllina and M. peninsulae (Echelle and Mosier, 1981, 1982). Excepting Asian and Japanese populations of silver carp and goldfish (family Cyprinidae), which may be man ...

Multilocus phylogenetic analysis of the genus Atherina (Pisces: Atherinidae) [PDF]
Sand-smelts are small fishes inhabiting inshore, brackish and freshwater environments and with a distribution in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, extending south into the Indian Ocean. Here, we present a broad phylogenetic analysis of the genus Atherina using three mitochondrial (control region, 12S and 16S) and two nuclear markers ...
