Stability of Atlantic kelp forests
Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 1988plants. The Nova Scotian kelp forest thinned out over the winter as kelp blades eroded and, presumably, as plants were dislodged during winter storms. Rapid kelp growth and recruitment resulted in the closure of the canopy shortly after. Surprisingly, there was no effect of understory seaweeds on the recruitment of L.

Primates of the Atlantic Forest
1996The Atlantic forest extends from the north-east of Brazil, state of Rio Grande do Norte, and including inland forests (brejos) in the state of Ceara, south along eastern Brazil, through the southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul, into the northeastern tip of Argentina in the province of Misiones and between the Rios Parana, Uruguai and Iguacu.

The vanishing Brazilian Atlantic forest
Biological Conservation, 1985Abstract The Brazilian Atlantic forest constitutes a unique biome characterised by a high species diversity and a high level of endemism. A long history of land clearing for crops, pastures, timber and firewood has resulted in over two centuries of widespread destruction. Today, less than 6·8% of the total area of the Atlantic forest of Minas Gerais

Spectral variability of atlantic forest species
2013 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium - IGARSS, 2013This paper investigates the spectral variability of Brazilian Atlantic Forest trees. Spectroscopy data (reflectance and transmittance) of full sunlight leaves were collected. The root mean square difference between pairs of spectra were used to estimate within- and between-species variability.

Vodún, Spirited Forests, and the African Atlantic Forest Complex
Journal of Africana Religions, 2020Abstract Vodún has been described as indefinable, endlessly flexible, and borderless. In this paper, I develop an analytical framework for understanding global Vodún, thereby challenging claims that Vodún is, at its core, inexplicable. To accomplish this, I combine over a decade of ethnographic research in Bénin and Haiti with my status ...

Atlantic Forest Southeast Reserves, Brazil
2018Atlantic Forest Southeast Reserves are in the states of Sao Paulo and Parana, southeastern Brazil. The area comprises the Serra do Mar coastal mountains chain and associated groups of peaks, hills, deep valleys, and coastal areas. The site is formed by 25 protected areas and contains one of the largest and best preserved domains of the Brazilian ...

The Atlantic Forest During Colonial Brazil
2023The European conquistadors found a very different version of nature in tropical America. Colonization was possible only with the collaboration of the native peoples, who ensured the survival of the colonizers in this strange environment. In addition to sharing their food culture, the indigenous people showed them not only forest resources that were ...

Predicting Extinction Risk of Brazilian Atlantic Forest Angiosperms
Conservation Biology, 2014Abstract Understanding how plant life history affects species vulnerability to anthropogenic disturbances and environmental change is a major ecological challenge. We examined how vegetation type, growth form, and geographic range size relate to extinction risk throughout the Brazilian Atlantic Forest domain.

Atlantic Forest Butterflies: Indicators for Landscape Conservation1
BIOTROPICA, 2000ABSTRACTThe Atlantic Forest region (wide sense) includes very complex tropical environments, increasingly threatened by extensive anthropogenic conversion (>90%). Ecologically specialized, short‐generation insects (butterflies) are evaluated here as indicators for monitoring community richness, landscape integrity, and sustainable resource use in ...
