Polychromophilus spp. (Haemosporida: Plasmodiidae): First Molecular Detection in Bat Flies From Brazilian Bats

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study identifies Polychromophilus sp. in blood‐feeding flies (Basilia speiseri and Basilia lindolphoi) from Myotis nigricans bats in Brazil, marking the first molecular detection of the parasite in an insect vector in this country. Two haplotypes were identified, both within the Polychromophilus murinus group.

Popfinder: A Highly Effective Artificial Neural Network Package for Genetic Population Assignment

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The ability to assign biological samples to source populations with high accuracy and precision based on genetic variation is important for numerous applications from ecological studies through wildlife conservation to epidemiology. However, population assignment when genetic differentiation is low is challenging, and methods to address this ...

Improving Whole Biodiversity Monitoring and Discovery With Environmental DNA Metagenomics

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Environmental DNA (eDNA) metagenomics sequences all DNA molecules present in environmental samples and has the potential of identifying virtually any organism from which they are derived. However, due to unacceptable levels of false positives and negatives, this approach is underexplored as a tool for biodiversity monitoring across the tree of

A Comprehensive Evaluation of Taxonomic Classifiers in Marine Vertebrate eDNA Studies

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is a widely used tool for surveying marine vertebrate biodiversity. To this end, many computational tools have been released and a plethora of bioinformatic approaches are used for eDNA‐based community composition analysis.
