Fishes of the southeastern Brazil Atlantic Forest

Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2014
The largest preserved areas of Atlantic Forest are located in the southeastern region of Brazil. Estuaries, mangroves, rivers and streams are home to a community of fish that is still poorly understood. The composition of fish species and their relationships with environmental conditions were used to identify homogeneous areas within a landscape of 33 ...

Financing Conservation in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

2021
The Atlantic Forest is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, due to a long term process of deforestation that must be reversed. Financial resources are necessary to foster the protection of remaining forests and restore the native habitats. This paper presents some alternatives to finance the conservation of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil and some ...

Vodún, Spirited Forests, and the African Atlantic Forest Complex

Journal of Africana Religions, 2020
Abstract Vodún has been described as indefinable, endlessly flexible, and borderless. In this paper, I develop an analytical framework for understanding global Vodún, thereby challenging claims that Vodún is, at its core, inexplicable. To accomplish this, I combine over a decade of ethnographic research in Bénin and Haiti with my status ...

Fine litterfall in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Biotropica, 2017
AbstractLitterfall is an essential component of tropical forest productivity, transferring nutrients from the vegetation back to soils. Here, we summarize the data from 105 estimates of fine litterfall production from 45 sites in the Atlantic Forest domain, including two types of forests, evergreen and seasonal, and two successional stages, secondary ...

Conservation Initiatives in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

2021
With a wide distribution across eastern South America, the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is a mosaic of lowland and montane vegetation types, such as evergreen forest, semideciduous and deciduous forest, mixed forest (e.g., Araucaria), mangroves, and restingas.

Spectral variability of atlantic forest species

2013 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium - IGARSS, 2013
This paper investigates the spectral variability of Brazilian Atlantic Forest trees. Spectroscopy data (reflectance and transmittance) of full sunlight leaves were collected. The root mean square difference between pairs of spectra were used to estimate within- and between-species variability.

A generic synopsis of Malpighiaceae in the Atlantic Forest

Nordic Journal of Botany, 2016
Malpighiaceae is one of the major families of tropical and subtropical lianas, easily recognized in the field due to its remarkable flower conservatism. The family has been the subject of different phylogenetic studies over the past fifteen years, which have demonstrated the paraphyly of its subfamilies, most of its tribes, and some of its largest ...

The scale of forest transition: Amazonia and the Atlantic forests of Brazil

Applied Geography, 2012
Abstract This article adapts a general equilibrium model that provides a spatial solution for land use, labor allocation, and product markets in a two good economy. The adaptation, based on von Thunen, considers the multi-regional case, and solves for two regions, one industrial and the other, a newly opened agricultural frontier.

Effects of forest fragmentation on small mammals in an Atlantic Forest landscape

Biodiversity and Conservation, 2004
(Uploaded by Plazi for the Bat Literature Project) Recent studies on the effects of tropical forest fragmentation indicate that fragmented landscapes are complex and heterogeneous systems influenced by factors other than the size or degree of isolation of forest remnants: of particular importance are the quality of the matrix and the edge-induced ...

Atlantic forest and leaf traits: an overview

Trees, 2019
Leaf traits in Atlantic forest are modulated by environmental filters and biotic interactions. More information about leaf traits and nutrient are needed. Categorizing tree species according to their relationships with ecosystem processes in the Atlantic forest (AF) biome is fundamental to better understand their functionality in this high biodiversity
