Retrospective Study of Traumatic Intra-Interspecific Interactions in Stranded Cetaceans, Canary Islands

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2020
Aggressive encounters involving cetacean species are widely described in the literature. However, detailed pathological studies regarding lesions produced by these encounters are scarce. From January 2000 to December 2017, 540 cetaceans stranded and were

Application of Shape Analyses to Recording Structures of Marine Organisms for Stock Discrimination and Taxonomic Purposes

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
Morphometric analysis of biogenic recording structures within marine organisms has applications in stock assessment, taxonomics, and ecomorphological studies, with shape variation markedly influenced by both genetics and the surrounding environment ...

CLIMATIC DATA COMPARISON BETWEEN MID-LATITUDE AZORES (NORTH ATLANTIC) AND TRISTAN DA CUNHA (SOUTH ATLANTIC) ISLANDS

open access: yesStudia Universitatis Babeş-Bolyai: Geographia, 2023
The Azores islands in the North Atlantic and the Tristan da Cunha islands in the South Atlantic are approximately located at the same latitude, stretching between 36 and 41 degrees North and South respectively. Nevertheless, there are important climatic

Equilibrium Bird Species Diversity in Atlantic Islands [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2017
Half a century ago, MacArthur and Wilson proposed that the number of species on islands tends toward a dynamic equilibrium diversity around which species richness fluctuates [1]. The current prevailing view in island biogeography accepts the fundamentals of MacArthur and Wilson's theory [2] but questions whether their prediction of equilibrium can be ...

Pollinator species richness and abundance across diverse habitat-types on Terceira Island (Azores, Portugal) [PDF]

open access: yesBiodiversity Data Journal
Azorean biodiversity is relatively well-known following important scientific contributions during the last three decades. These have set a comprehensive species checklist for the Archipelago, improved significantly the knowledge on species abundance ...

A new high‐resolution melt curve eDNA assay to monitor the simultaneous presence of invasive brown trout (Salmo trutta) and endangered galaxiids

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, 2021
Brown trout are highly invasive in the Southern Hemisphere where they support important sport fisheries and aquaculture activities, which may impact endangered native galaxiid fishes and cause conflicts.

Fecundity of the squid Loligo vulgaris, Lamarck, 1798 (Myopsida, Loliginidae) off northwest Africa

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2000
Egg dimensions were 2.0-2.2 x 1.5-1.6 mm. Potential fecundity (all oocyte stock) of mature female L. vulgaris was estimated as 28,500-74,200 oocytes, including 3,500-30,500 yolk oocytes, 1,300-8,000 of those were ripe eggs in the oviduct.

Aspects of female reproductive biology of the orange-back squid, Sthenoteuthis pteropus (Steenstup) (Oegopsina: Ommastrephidae) in the eastern tropical Atlantic

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2005
Orange-back squid females, Sthenoteuthis pteropus, were found to mature at two different sizes: 230-270 mm and 380-450 mm mantle length (ML). The systematic status of these groups remains unknown.

First data on ovary maturation and fecundity in the squid family Histioteuthidae

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2001
The potential fecundity of histioteuthid squid ranges from 3,000 to 275,000 oocytes. During maturation a significant oocyte resorption occurs in many species; therefore only advanced maturing females can be taken into account for fecundity estimation.
