Assessment and Management of Atlantic and Gulf Menhaden Stocks [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
The organization of coastwide management programs for Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, and Gulf menhaden, B. patronus, are described. Recent assessments of the status of the Atlantic and Gulf menhaden stocks are summarized. Estimates of population size and fishing mortalities are obtained from virtual population analysis, and are used in ...

Infectivity and pathogenicity of the oomycete Aphanomyces invadans in Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus [PDF]

open access: yesDiseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2003
Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus develop characteristic skin ulcers in response to infection by the oomycete Aphanomyces invadans. To investigate pathogenicity, we conducted a dose response study. Juvenile menhaden were inoculated subcutaneously with 0, 1, 5, 10, 100, and 500 secondary zoospores per fish and monitored for 37 d post-injection (p.i.)

DNA-based identification of anadromous fishes (Alosa spp., Family Clupeidae) in stomach contents of marine groundfish. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Fish Biol
Abstract Using DNA techniques for prey identification is an emerging approach for enhancing the precision and accuracy of trophic information. We evaluated the effectiveness of DNA‐based prey identification in conjunction with visual stomach content analysis of commercially important groundfish in the nearshore Gulf of Maine, with a focus on ...

Overview of Mark-recovery Studies on Adult and Juvenile Atlantic Menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, and Gulf Menhaden, B. patronus [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
Extensive mark-recapture studies using internal ferromagnetic tags have been conducted on Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, and Gulf menhaden,B. patronus. From 1966 through 1969, 1,066,357 adult Atlantic menhaden were tagged; subsequently, from 1970 through 1987, 428,272 juveniles of this species were tagged. Similarly, from 1969 through 1971, 75,

Life history patterns of two allopatric clupeids : Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) and gulf menhaden (B. patronus) [PDF]

open access: yes
Atlantic menhaden, compared to gulf menhaden, exhibit a life history pattern that appears to be adapted to a more unpredictable reproductive environment.

A molecular genetic investigation of the population structure of Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), through landings, support one of the largest commercial fisheries in the United States. Recent consolidation of the once coast-widereduction fishery to waters within and around Chesapeake Bay has raised concerns ...

On Assessment of the Atlantic Menhaden Population

open access: yes, 2022
The Atlantic menhaden population is assessed using Statistical Catch-at-Age/Length (SCAA/L) methodology. Two dominant issues have important impacts on the assessment results. The first is selectivity doming, which is clearly preferred by the data, and leads to higher estimates of spawning biomass in absolute terms.

Temperature and somatic growth effects on otolith growth of larval Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus (Actinopterygii: Clupeiformes: Clupeidae) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2012
Background. If a link exists between somatic and otolith growth, otolith size and microstructure analysis can be a useful tool in studies of larval fish growth and condition—methods like growth back-calculation or marginal increment width ...

Is Overfishing of Atlantic Menhaden Taking Place?

open access: yes, 2023
The sensitivities examined in the recent update of the 2010 benchmark assessment of Atlantic menhaden are extended to include a case which combines estimable doming of the selectivities at age for both the reduction and bait fisheries, with a statistically defensible effective sample size for the catch-at-age term in the likelihood maximised in the ...

Addendum: On Assessment of the Atlantic Menhaden Population

open access: yes, 2022
The possibility of a single change in the selectivity function for each of the four fisheries during recent years is introduced into the assessment model. This leads to fits of the data to the model which are considerably preferred in terms of AIC. For scenario II for which only the JAI abundance index is used in the fit, recent fishing mortalities no ...
