Theoretical Investigation of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2015
AbstractA weakly damped mode of variability, corresponding to the oceanic signature of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) was found through the linear stability analysis of a realistic ocean general circulation model. A simple two-level model was proposed to rationalize both its period and damping rate.

Emerging negative Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation index in spite of warm subtropics. [PDF]

open access: yesSci Rep, 2017
AbstractSea surface temperatures in the northern North Atlantic have shown a marked decrease over the past several years. The sea surface in the subpolar gyre is now as cold as it was during the last cold phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation index in the 1990s.

Tracking the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation through the last 8,000 years. [PDF]

open access: yesNat Commun, 2011
Understanding the internal ocean variability and its influence on climate is imperative for society. A key aspect concerns the enigmatic Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), a feature defined by a 60- to 90-year variability in North Atlantic sea-surface temperatures.

Accelerated decline of summer Arctic sea ice during 1850–2017 and the amplified Arctic warming during the recent decades

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2021
The 168 year trends of summer (July–September) sea ice area (SIA) variations in six Arctic regions during 1850–2017 are analyzed. SIA has been significantly decreasing in most Arctic regions since 1850.

Impacts of ocean-atmosphere teleconnection patterns on the south-central United States

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
Recent research has linked the climate variability associated with ocean-atmosphere teleconnections to impacts rippling throughout environmental, economic, and social systems.

Structural fluctuations of the Arctic Oscillation tied to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
The Arctic Oscillation (AO) has been observed to undergo distinct decadal structural fluctuations that significantly influence regional weather and climate.

Sub‐surface signatures of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2008
Sub‐surface signatures of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) are identified using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) measurements of temperature from the surface down to a depth of 400 m. Basin averaged temperature anomalies in the North Atlantic at different depths display multidecadal variability with a phase shift between temperature ...

The Extremely Active 2020 Hurricane Season in the North Atlantic and Its Relation to Climate Variability and Change

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2022
The 2020 hurricane season in the North Atlantic basin was the most active on record, with 30 named tropical cyclones. In this study, climate trends in oceanic and atmospheric parameters (including the sea surface temperatures, ocean heat content, cloud ...

An interaction network perspective on the relation between patterns of sea surface temperature variability and global mean surface temperature [PDF]

open access: yesEarth System Dynamics, 2014
On interannual- to multidecadal timescales variability in sea surface temperature appears to be organized in large-scale spatiotemporal patterns. In this paper, we investigate these patterns by studying the community structure of interaction networks ...

Multidecadal Mobility of the North Atlantic Oscillation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2013
Abstract The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is one of the most important modes of variability in the global climate system and is characterized by a meridional dipole in the sea level pressure field, with centers of action near Iceland and the Azores.
