An Investigation of the Ocean’s Role in Atlantic Multidecadal Variability

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2020
A mechanistic understanding of the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) is highly desirable since it will considerably aid regional and global climate predictions.

Seasonal Predictions and Their Applications in the Mediterranean Region: Part I—Sources of Predictability and Prediction Skill

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
The ability to predict climate fluctuations at seasonal timescales offers significant socio‐economic benefits. However, limited understanding of predictability mechanisms and model errors hinders forecast quality. Recent research has improved forecasting systems and data quality.

Projected Intensification of Hydroclimatic Extremes in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, Under CMIP6 Scenarios

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
The graphical abstract presents observed (1963–2023) and projected changes in hydroclimatic extremes in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. It integrates dry‐spell duration (CDD) and extreme precipitation (R95pTOT) using CMIP6 multimodel ensembles under SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5, and SSP5‐8.5.

Impacts of ocean-atmosphere teleconnection patterns on the south-central United States

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
Recent research has linked the climate variability associated with ocean-atmosphere teleconnections to impacts rippling throughout environmental, economic, and social systems.

Using a causal effect network approach to quantify the impact of ENSO teleconnections on summer monsoon precipitation over the Himalayas and key regional circulations

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We quantified the causal effect (CE) of linkages between four monthly climate indices ENSO, SMHP, RWC, and MHC for 1940–2022 with a time lag of one month. The results show CE values from (1) ENSO to SMHP of −0.33$$ -0.33 $$ to −0.44$$ -0.44 $$ (i.e., a one standard deviation (SD) increase in ENSO causes a decrease in SMHP of −0.33$$ -0.33 $$ to −0.44$$

The role of Atlantic-Arctic exchange in North Atlantic multidecadal climate variability [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2011
It has recently been suggested that multidecadal variability in North Atlantic sea surface temperature occurs with two dominant periods. In this paper we investigate the origin of these two time scales in a 500 year control run of the GFDL CM2.1 model.

Capelin Size, Condition, and Abundance Through Multiple Heatwaves in Alaska

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Capelin (Mallotus spp.) are pelagic forage fishes that can be especially abundant in sub‐arctic marine ecosystems and are important prey for upper trophic‐level consumers. Abundance and distribution of capelin have been linked to ocean temperature, but the magnitude and directionality of thermal sensitivity can vary regionally.

Precipitation in eastern China over the past millennium varied with large-scale climate patterns

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment, 2022
Interactions between the monsoon and decadal oscillations in the Pacific and Atlantic have influenced the multidecadal variability of precipitation in eastern China over the past 1150 years, according to stable oxygen isotope records from three ...

Decadal Rapid Change in Energetic Carrying Capacity for Juvenile Chum Salmon in the Sanriku Coast

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Adult returns to coastal rivers in Sanriku, located near the southernmost area of chum salmon distribution, have declined since 2010. Climate‐induced fluctuations in juvenile prey availability may affect growth and survival, which are linked to adult returns.
