ABSTRACT The Amazon and Atlantic forests harbour immense biodiversity shaped by complex evolutionary history with diverse processes leading to species build‐up. We investigated the Cinereous Antshrike species complex (Thamnomanes caesius and T. schistogynus) to disentangle the relative contributions of riverine barriers and historical climatic ...

Monsanima tinguaensis (Apocynaceae), an enigmatic new species from Atlantic rainforest
A new species of Asclepiadoideae (Apocynaceae) with enigmatic taxonomic position was found in the Atlantic rainforest of Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. To ascertain its affinities within the Asclepiadeae, we performed phylogenetic analyses using the plastid regions trnT-L and rps16.

ABSTRACT The ecology of forests, their losses, and terrestrial wood decomposition dynamics have been intensively studied and reviewed. In the aquatic realm, reviews have concentrated on large wood (LW) in rivers and the transition from freshwater to marine environments in the Pacific Northwest of North America. However, a comprehensive global synthesis

Litter decomposition in the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil
Primary tropical rainforests are increasingly replaced by secondary forests. Whether these secondary habitats are able to maintain the biodiversity and ecosystem functionality of the original forests is still a matter of debate.

Frugivore Declines Across Taxa Affect Forest Biomass
We examined how frugivore declines affect aboveground biomass in 260 1‐ha forest plots across Gabon using imputed frugivory networks between 122 frugivores and 99,349 trees. Simulated frugivore declines across Gabon tended to reduce aboveground biomass, with effects varying by taxon and geography.

The study of Neotropical Apicotermitinae remains challenging due to the large number of undescribed taxa (Linnean shortfall) as well as the scarcity of distributional data (Wallacean shortfall). Despite recent efforts to reduce the first one, the second remains an even more significant challenge.
