Nonlinear interactions between the Amazon River basin and the Tropical North Atlantic at interannual timescales [PDF]

open access: yesClimate Dynamics, 50(7-8), 2951-2969 (2018)
We study the physical processes involved in the potential influence of Amazon (AM) hydroclimatology over the Tropical North Atlantic (TNA) Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) at interannual timescales, by analyzing time series of the precipitation index (P-E) over AM, as well as the surface atmospheric pressure gradient between both regions, and TNA SSTs ...

Pulling back the curtain on 'behind the border' trade costs: The case of EU-US agri-food trade

open access: yesSpanish Journal of Agricultural Research, 2017
With the rise of anti-free-trade sentiment on both sides of the Atlantic, there is a growing urgency by trade negotiators to conclude the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations. The harmonisation of non-tariff restrictions is

Trade in the Atlantic Basin, 2000-2012: a panoramic view

open access: yesRevista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals, 2013
This article offers a descriptive analysis of the goods trade in the Atlantic, and provides the following data: the largest trade volume can be found in the North Atlantic and the Americas, albeit with slower growth; Africa and South America trade mainly

Economic relations between Normandy and Andalusia in the 16th century

open access: yesStudia Historica: Historia Moderna, 2020
The commercial relations between Andalusia and Normandy were based on the exchange of raw materials and Spanish agricultural products against Norman industrial products, especially textile, destined for trade with America.

On the contribution of Rossby waves driven by surface buoyancy fluxes to low-frequency North Atlantic steric sea surface height variations [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Previous studies have shown that wind-forced baroclinic Rossby waves can capture a large portion of low-frequency steric SSH variations in the North Atlantic. In this paper, we extend the classical wind-driven Rossby wave model derived in a 1.5 layer ocean to include surface buoyancy forcing, and then use it to assess the contribution from buoyancy ...

Dispersion and distortions in the trans-Atlantic slave trade [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of International Economics, 2012
This paper documents the heterogeneity across voyages during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Output dispersion is highest across Portuguese voyages, lower across French voyages, and lowest across British voyages. We use a structural approach to identify market distortions from wedges in first order conditions.

Setting readers at sea: Fatou Diome’s Ventre de l’Atlantique

open access: yesTydskrif vir Letterkunde, 2019
Fatou Diome’s first novel, Le Ventre de l’Atlantique (2003), can be read as a work of migrant literature in which the Atlantic figures as a separating expanse beholden to a single past, that of the Atlantic Slave Trade.

Ocean Wind Wave Climate Responses to Wintertime North Atlantic Atmospheric Transient Eddies and Low Frequency Flow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Atmospheric transient eddies and low-frequency flow contribution to the ocean surface wave climate in the North Atlantic during boreal winter is investigated (1980 - 2016). We conduct a set of numerical simulations with a state-of-the-art spectral wave model Wavewatch III forced by decomposed wind fields derived from the ERA-Interim reanalysis (0.7 ...
