NONTRAUMATIC DISLOCATIONS OF THE ATLANTO-AXIAL JOINT
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1931Recently we have observed several cases of dislocation of the atlanto-axial articulation which were not associated with trauma but resulted as a complication of acute infectious diseases. With the development of the roentgen ray, cases of traumatic dislocation of this joint have been diagnosed more frequently.

Osteoarthritis of the atlanto-axial joint
International Orthopaedics, 1982Thirty-one patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the atlanto-axial joint are described, suggesting that this disease is not particularly uncommon. The most characteristic radiological signs are narrowing of the joint space from loss of articular cartilage, marginal cortical thickening and osteophyte formation.

Subluxation of the atlanto-axial joint
British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1985A case of post operative atlanto-axial dislocation is presented which was diagnosed on CT scan although the clinical signs and symptoms should have suggested the diagnosis. It is recommended that all patients who present with torticollis in the early post operative period should be considered to have C1-C2 dislocation and an orthopaedic opinion should ...

Atlanto-axial rotatory fixation. (Fixed rotatory subluxation of the atlanto-axial joint)
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1977In seventeen cases of irreducible atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation (here called fixation), the striking features were the delay in diagnosis and the persistent clinical and roentgenographic deformities. All patients had torticollis and restricted, often painful neck motion, and seven young patients with long-standing deformity had flattening on one ...

The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1964
A study of atlanto-axial motions using clinical material, a fresh anatomical specimen, and cineroentgenography is presented. The findings in previous studies have been confirmed. Special emphasis was directed to lateral motion of the atlas on the axis since this motion has received little clinical attention and is not well appreciated.

Prevalence of degenerative changes of the atlanto-axial joints
The Spine Journal, 2015Degeneration of the atlantodens and atlanto-axial joints is associated with cervical spine pain and may also be associated with an increased risk of dens fracture. However, there is paucity of literature describing the prevalence of specific degenerative changes in the atlantodens and atlanto-axial facet joints. To document age-related degenerative ...

Rotatory dislocation of both atlanto-axial joints
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume, 1984A case of rotatory dislocation of both atlanto-axial joints is presented. A review of the literature reveals two other cases, both in children. This would appear to be the first report in an adult, who survived and made a full recovery.

A case of fourth atlanto-axial facet joint: anatomical description
European Spine Journal, 2015To report a rare fourth atlanto-axial joint.A cadaveric specimen of a young male adult from occiput to C4 was dissected for anatomical study of craniocervical region. A true fourth atlanto-axial joint was confirmed. Its morphological characteristics were described. The fourth atlantoaxial joint is rarely seen.

Atlanto-Occipital and Atlanto-Axial Joint Injections
2018The atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial joints are susceptible to arthritis and can be injured during acceleration/deceleration (“whiplash”) injuries. Patients often report neck pain and “stiffness” and demonstrate decreased cervical range of motion in all three planes for flexion, extension, and lateral rotation.

Atlanto-Axial Joint Injection: Ultrasound
2016The atlanto-axial joint accounts for up to 16% of patients with occipital headache. Distending the lateral atlanto-axial joint with contrast agent produces occipital pain, and injection of local anesthetic into the joint relieves the headache. The clinical presentation of atlanto-axial joint pain is not specific and therefore cannot be used alone to ...
