Vertical atlantoaxial dislocation [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Spine Journal, 1999
An unusual case of vertical atlantoaxial dislocation without medulla oblongata or spinal cord injury is reported. The pathogenic process suggested occipito-axial dislocation. The case was treated surgically with excellent results on mobility and pain.

A Review of the Diagnosis and Treatment of Atlantoaxial Dislocations

open access: yesGlobal Spine Journal, 2014
Study Design Literature review. Objective Atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) is a rare and potentially fatal disturbance to the normal occipital-cervical anatomy that affects some populations disproportionately, which may cause permanent neurologic deficits ...

Feasibility and Safety of the C1 "Zero Angle" Screw: A Novel "In-Out-In" Technique for Atlantoaxial Dislocation. [PDF]

open access: yesOrthop Surg
The C1ZAS with “in–out–in” technique is presented as an alternative to C1 PS in cases of AAD with a trajectory parallel to the sagittal plane. This method involves penetrating the recess of the atlas to achieve tricortical or quadricortical purchase for rigid fixation while minimizing the risk of injury to the V3 segment of the VA.

Concomitant atlantoaxial and atlanto-occipital rotatory dislocation in children: Radiological features, diagnostic pitfalls, and long-term outcome

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery, 2021
While the pathological manifestation of atlantoaxial rotatory dislocation has been well described in the medical literature, the combined dislocation of the atlantoaxial and atlanto-occipital joints, or OAARD – short for occipital-atlantoaxial rotatory ...

Novel MRI Signs in Atlantodental Space Predict Reduction Degree of Atlantoaxial Dislocation. [PDF]

open access: yesOrthop Surg
We summarized cases of AAD, classified based on the atlantodental space using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). and preliminarily explored its impact on the degree of reduction. We found patients with high signal intensity were more likely to achieve satisfactory reduction after direct posterior surgery.

Surgical treatment of a complex craniocervical malformation combined with posterior cranial fossa teratoma: a case report and literature review

open access: yesChinese Neurosurgical Journal, 2021
Background Basilar invagination (BI) with atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) is not uncommon in patients with scoliosis, Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS), and other bone deformities.

Rotatory atlantoaxial dislocation presenting as spinal kyphoscoliosis

open access: yesJournal of Craniovertebral Junction and Spine, 2021
A 16-year-old male presented with primary complaint of worsening dorsal spinal kyphoscoliosis (SKS) for 3 years. More recently, he developed spasticity in legs, breathlessness on mild exertion, and sleep apneas.

A novel 3D-printed locking cage for anterior atlantoaxial fixation and fusion: case report and in vitro biomechanical evaluation

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2021
Background Treatment of atlantoaxial dislocation is aimed at reduction and stabilization of the atlantoaxial joint. 3D printing refers to a process where additive manufacturing is achieved under precise computer control.

Acute traumatic lateral atlantoaxial dislocation associated with locked atlas lateral mass and odontoid process fracture: A clinical case study and literature review

open access: yesNorth American Spine Society Journal, 2022
Background: Traumatic atlantoaxial dislocation combined with locked atlas lateral mass and odontoid process fracture is a complex injury and is extremely rare. We describe the surgical technique by presenting a clinical case study in managing a traumatic
