Fracture of the anterior arch of the atlas, accompanied by posterior atlantoaxial dislocation, typically presents on CT imaging as the odontoid process penetrating through and causing a high‐energy shear fracture of the anterior arch. This injury may occur with or without retained fracture fragments.

Background Airway management in patients with inhalation injury is particularly challenging because of rapidly progressive airway edema. This difficulty is further compounded in patients with ankylosing spondylitis, in whom cervical spine rigidity and deformity severely restrict neck mobility and may prevent standard positioning for airway ...

Background Grisel’s syndrome is a rare nontraumatic atlantoaxial rotatory fixation often associated with head and neck infections or inflammatory diseases. Its occurrence following Kawasaki disease (KD) is uncommon and rarely necessitates halo‐vest immobilization.

A C1-2 locked facet in a child with atlantoaxial rotatory fixation. Case report
Conservative treatment is reported in a child with atlantoaxial rotatory fixation. Three-dimensional (3D) computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated the degree of dislocation and alar ligament damage.

Occipitoatlantal and Atlantoaxial Dislocation
Vertical distractive forces at the craniovertebral junction can affect the occipitoatlantal joint or the atlantoaxial joint. These lesions are part of the same spectrum of injuries. They share the same mechanism of injury and high mortality rate.

Atlantoaxial mobility after screw fixation of the odontoid: a computed tomographic study
Between 1979 and 1989, anterior screw fixation of the odontoid process was performed in 16 patients with fractures of the odontoid. One patient died suddenly 2 days after the operation. Postmortem examination could not disclose the cause of death.

Biomechanical Evaluation of Anterior Plate Fixation With Cage for Basilar Invagination With Atlantoaxial Dislocation: A Cadaveric Study [PDF]
Objective To evaluate the biomechanical characteristics of 2 anterior fixation techniques (clival plate fixation [CPF], transoral atlantoaxial reduction plate [TARP]) versus posterior occipitocervical fixation (POCF) for basilar invagination with ...
