The atmosphere is the receiver of many by-products of our society, such us products of combustion of fossil fuels and industrial manufacturing. The studies on chemical pathways of trace atmospheric species are often complexes since the life cycles of such species are linked to an elaborate system of chemical and physical processes.

Estimates of Koyama indicate a predominantly biological origin with a total production rate of about 2.7 x 10/sup 14/ g CH/sub 4//yr. From that the author estimated the atmospheric lifetime of methane to be around 20 years.
