ATMOSPHERIC WAVES IN THE NORTHWESTERN UNITED STATES

Journal of Meteorology, 1948
Abstract I. The flow of air in vertical planes across the Rocky Mountains is studied through the potential-temperature distribution. Sinusoidal configurations of the isentropes are observed which seem to correspond to theoretical patterns, i.e., wide separation of isentropic surfaces (low stability) and ascent overlying descent in the lee with a nodal ...

Perceptions of Ward Atmosphere on an Oncology Unit

The International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine, 1982
This study examined perceptions of ward atmosphere and ideal ward atmosphere by twenty patients, twenty-four staff, and fifteen family members on an oncology unit at a major cancer research institute. Specified preferences for an ideal ward atmosphere were assumed to reflect psychosocial needs of the three groups.

Unit Thermal Performance of Atmospheric Spray Cooling Systems

Journal of Heat Transfer, 1980
Thermal performance of an open atmospheric spray pond or canal depends on the direct-contact evaporative cooling of an individual spray unit (spray nozzle or module) and the interference caused by local heating and humidification. Droplet parameters may be combined into a dimensionless group, number of transfer units (NTU) or equivalent, whereas large ...

Atmospheric Turbidity over the United States, 1961–1966

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1969
Abstract Five years of turbidity measurements from a network of stations in the United States are analyzed. Measurements are made with the Volz sunphotometer; the instrumentits calibration, and its use are described. The relationship of these measurements to those of Linke and Angstrom is briefly discussed. Analysis of the data indicates the following:

Trends in atmospheric reactive nitrogen for the Eastern United States

Environmental Pollution, 2011
Reactive nitrogen can travel far from emission sources and impact sensitive ecosystems. From 2002 to 2006, policy actions have led to decreases in NO(x) emissions from power plants and motor vehicles. In this study, atmospheric chemical transport modeling demonstrates that these emissions reductions have led to a downward trend in ambient measurements ...

Use of the electrosurgical unit in a carbon dioxide atmosphere

Journal of Medical Engineering & Technology, 2016
The electrosurgical unit (ESU) utilizes an electrical discharge to cut and coagulate tissue and is often held above the surgical site, causing a spark to form. The voltage at which the spark is created, termed the breakdown voltage, is governed by the surrounding gaseous environment.

Accelerating atmospheric physics parameterizations using graphics processing units

The International Journal of High Performance Computing Applications
As part of a project aimed at exploring the use of next-generation high-performance computing technologies for numerical weather prediction, we have ported two physics modules from the Common Community Physics Package (CCPP) to Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and obtained accelerations of up to 10× relative to a comparable multi-core CPU.

Statistical variation of number of atmospherics per unit time

Proceedings of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1970
The results of an experimental estimation of the statical characteristics of the number of atmospherics per unit time which exceed a fixed threshold of field strength are given for the case when reception is at very low frequencies, in a frequency bandwidth greater than the effective bandwidth of the atmospherics spectrum.

[Effect of partially open department on unit atmosphere].

Psychiatrische Praxis, 1997
Ward atmosphere was assessed with the help of the Ward Atmosphere Scale (WAS) by patients, nurses and physicians on 8 admission units before and after the introduction of the partial open door system. On average, on 45% of the days on which the units could have been potentially open, they were indeed at least temporarily open.

Variations of atmospheric temperature with altitude in the United States

Electrical Engineering, 1941
It has long been recognized that with increase in altitude the density of air decreases and influences the voltage rating and temperature rise of electrical apparatus. However, different standards for apparatus do not give the same weight to these factors.
