Atmospheric corrosion modeling
Corrosion Reviews, 2014Abstract A better understanding of corrosion processes during the last years is leading to an increased demand for numerical corrosion models. Corrosion models become increasingly relevant toward simulations, lifetime predictions, and the optimization of corrosion prevention.

Buildings, transportation means, infrastructures…Any work in contact with the natural atmosphere is subjected to atmospheric corrosion. This corrosion can provoke failures impacting electronic systems or transportation means, it can reduce the reliability of devices and thus become a threat for the safety of persons.

The purpose of atmospheric corrosion testing is two-fold: to determine (1) the rate and nature of corrosive attack of a metal by atmospheric agencies and (2) the efficacy of measures used for preventing the attack. Results of such tests should always be correlated with the prevailing atmospheric conditions at the test site.
