Turbulence-driven thermal and kinetic energy fluxes in the atmospheres of hot Jupiters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We have performed high resolution $3-$dimensional compressible hydrodynamics simulations to investigate the effects of shocks and turbulence on energy transport into hot Jupiter atmospheres, under a variety of shear gradients. We focus on a local atmospheric region to accurately follow the small-scale structures of turbulence and shocks.

A lidar for detecting atmospheric turbulence based on modified Von Karman turbulence power spectrum

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics
Introduction: Atmospheric turbulence is a kind of random vortex motion. A series of turbulent effects, such as fluctuation of light intensity, occur when laser is transmitted in atmospheric turbulence. Methods: In order to verify the possibility of ...

Changes in orbital-angular-momentum modes of a propagated vortex Gaussian beam through weak-to-strong atmospheric turbulence.

open access: yesOptics Express, 2016
The radial average-power distribution and normalized average power of orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) modes in a vortex Gaussian beam after passing through weak-to-strong atmospheric turbulence are theoretically formulated. Based on numerical calculations,

High Shear Dispersion Techniques for Up‐Scaling and Controllable Cathode Morphology in High Performance Li−S Pouch Cells

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
The effect of the blending procedure on the C−S suspension and therefore, on the Li−S battery performance is investigated. By comparing a common laboratory blender with a high shear mixing device, the higher shear forces result in a lower porosity and improved homogeneity of the electrode leading to enhanced cycle life, especially in multi‐layered ...

Free-space to few-mode-fiber coupling under atmospheric turbulence.

open access: yesOptics Express, 2016
High speed free space optical communication (FSOC) has taken advantages of components developed for fiber-optic communication systems. Recently, with the rapid development of few-mode-fiber based fiber communication systems, few-mode-fiber components ...

The Value Chain of Sustainable Dual Carbon Sodium Ion Capacitors

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
Sodium‐ion capacitors (SICs) bridge the energy‐power gap between batteries and supercapacitors, offering sustainable and scalable energy storage solutions. This review provides a 360‐degree perspective on SIC technology, covering material choices, presodiation strategies, manufacturing challenges, applications and life cycle assessment to ensure ...

Single Cell Protein Production From Ethanol: Model‐Based Bioreactor Operation at Industrial Scale

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Alternative fermentation feedstocks such as ethanol can be produced from CO2 via electrocatalytic processes that coproduce O2. In this study, industrial‐scale fermentation of ethanol with pure O2 for single cell protein (SCP) production was studied using a modeling approach.

On the Power-law Scaling of Turbulence Cospectra Part 1: Stably Stratified Atmospheric Boundary Layer [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Turbulent fluxes in the atmospheric surface layer are key input for the prediction of weather, hydrology, and carbon dioxide concentration. In numerical modelling of turbulent fluxes, a -7/3 power-law scaling in turbulence cospectra is usually assumed at high wavenumbers.

Influence of non-Kolmogorov atmospheric turbulence on the beam quality of vortex beams.

open access: yesOptics Express, 2016
Based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle and the definition of second-order moments of the Wigner distribution function (WDF), the analytical expressions for the propagation factors (M2-factors) and Strehl ratio SR of the Gaussian Schell-model ...
