Fractal Scaling of Explosively Driven Product Gases

open access: yesPropellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics, EarlyView.
The expanding interface between explosive product gases and ambient air is characterized as a function of time by the fractal dimension of the interface which is extracted from high‐speed image sequences. The interface is observed to increase in fractal dimension, and thus complexity, as time from detonation progresses.

Rain in convective downdraughts

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study presents results from the simulation of idealised, rain‐laden downdraughts using the large‐eddy model MONC. It is found that a drier environment has the effect of increasing cooling in the downdraught, but reducing the peak in downdraught speed.

A case study of boundary‐layer development downstream of a small, remote island

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
An empirical investigation into fog–island interactions near a remote North Atlantic island during July 2022 is carried out using land‐ and ship‐based observing systems. During the case study, surface winds steadily decreased (a) while strong diurnal forcing caused strong spatial gradients in surface temperatures across the observing region (b ...
