On the propagation of waves in the atmosphere [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2021
The leading-order equations governing the unsteady dynamics of large-scale atmospheric motions are derived, via a systematic asymptotic approach based on the thin-shell approximation applied to the ellipsoidal model of the Earth’s geoid.

Wave heating of the solar atmosphere [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2015
Magnetic waves are a relevant component in the dynamics of the solar atmosphere. Their significance has increased because of their potential as a remote diagnostic tool and their presumed contribution to plasma heating processes. We discuss our current understanding of coronal heating by magnetic waves, based on recent observational evidence and ...

The dust storm and its interaction with atmospheric waves on Mars

open access: yes地球与行星物理论评, 2021
Mars shares many similarities with Earth. The comparative study of the climate between the two planets is of great significance to understand the evolution of the Earth's atmosphere.

Observation and simulation of atmospheric gravity waves exciting subsequent tsunami along the coastline of Japan after Tonga explosion event

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Tsunamis are commonly generated by earthquakes beneath the ocean floor, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. The tsunami following the Tonga eruption of 2022 is believed to have been excited by atmospheric pressure fluctuations generated by the explosion ...

On the propagation of nonlinear waves in the atmosphere

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2022
Starting from the general equations of fluid dynamics that describe the atmosphere, and using asymptotic methods, we present the derivation of the leading-order equations for nonlinear wave propagation in the troposphere. The only simplifying assumption is that the flow in the atmosphere exists in a thin shell over a sphere.

An Updated Estimate of the Indonesian Throughflow Geostrophic Transport: Interannual Variability and Salinity Effect

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
While the pivotal role of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) in the global ocean circulation and climate has been widely recognized, accurate estimation of its volume transport based on observational data remains challenging.

Acoustic-gravity waves in a viscous and thermally conducting isothermal atmosphere (part II: For small Prandtl number)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences, 1995
In part one of these series we investigated the effect of Newtonian cooling on acoustic-gravity waves in an isothermal atmosphere for large Prandtl number.

Transmission Characteristics of Adaptive Compensation for Joint Atmospheric Turbulence Effects on the OAM-Based Wireless Communication System

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Atmospheric turbulence has an impact on the transmission of electromagnetic vortex waves with an orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode. In this paper, based on the joint atmospheric turbulence model, we examine the influence of atmospheric turbulence on ...

Acoustic-gravity waves in a viscous and thermally conducting isothermal atmosphere

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences, 1995
In this paper we will investigate the effect of Newtonian cooling on the propagation of acoustic-gravity waves in a viscous and thermally conducting isothermal atmosphere for large Prandtl number and for an arbitrary values of Newtonian cooling ...
