Domestic gas consumption, household behaviour patterns, and window opening [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University, 19/03/1982.Domestic gas consumption for central heating is a function both of the efficiency of the heating system and the way in which it is used.

Prompt TeV-PeV atmospheric neutrino window [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review D, 2002
We discuss the possible existence of an observational window, in the TeV-PeV energy range, for the detection of prompt neutrinos from the decay of charmed particles produced in cosmic ray interactions with the atmosphere. We calculate the event rates for muon and tau neutrinos of heavy quark, mostly charm, origin.

Coupling of Epsilon-Near-Zero Mode to Mushroom-Type Metamaterial for Optimizing Infrared Suppression and Radiative Cooling

open access: yesPhotonic Sensors, 2022
We report a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatible metamaterial-based spectrally selective absorber/emitter (MBSSAE) for infrared (IR) stealth, which has the low absorption/emissivity in the IR atmospheric transmission window (3 µm–5 ...

Remote Sensing Image Dehazing Using Heterogeneous Atmospheric Light Prior

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2023
Remote sensing images (RSIs) captured in haze weather will suffer from serious quality degradation with color distortion and contrast reduction, which creates numerous challenges for the utilization of RSIs. To address these issues, this paper proposes a

Realization of an efficient radiative cooling emitter with double layer inorganic SiO2 and TiO2 metamaterial

open access: yesResults in Physics, 2023
A novel double-layer thermal emitter consisting of inorganic SiO2 and TiO2 metamaterials is proposed and numerically investigated. It can achieve ultrahigh absorption of 96.42 % and 92.97 % in the first and second atmospheric transparency window ...

A Metamaterial Absorber Based on Particle Swarm Optimization Suitable for Earth’s Atmospheric Transparency Window

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2021
The absorption and reflection of electromagnetic waves by various particles in the earth’s atmosphere allow the passage of only certain electromagnetic wavelengths to reach the ground, called Earth’s atmosphere transparent window.

Spectra as windows into exoplanet atmospheres [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2014
Understanding a planet’s atmosphere is a necessary condition for understanding not only the planet itself, but also its formation, structure, evolution, and habitability. This requirement puts a premium on obtaining spectra and developing credible interpretative tools with which to retrieve vital planetary information.

Four-dimensional variational data assimilation for inverse modelling of atmospheric methane emissions: method and comparison with synthesis inversion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
A four-dimensional variational (4D-Var) data assimilation system for inverse modelling of atmospheric methane emissions is presented. The system is based on the TM5 atmospheric transport model.

VO2-based thermally tunable emitter and preliminary design of switching for mid-infrared atmospheric windows

open access: yesResults in Physics, 2021
An atmospheric window is greatly significant in the radiative cooling field. In this study, we preliminarily design a thermally tunable metamaterial emitter that can be used as an internal and external emission switch for a mid-infrared atmospheric ...

On the parallelization of atmospheric inversions of CO2 surface fluxes within a variational framework [PDF]

open access: yesGeoscientific Model Development, 2013
The variational formulation of Bayes' theorem allows inferring CO2 sources and sinks from atmospheric concentrations at much higher time–space resolution than the ensemble or analytical approaches.
