Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Scattering of Cold Atom Coherences by Hot Atoms: Frequency Shifts from Background Gas Collisions

open access: yes, 2013
Frequency shifts from background gas collisions currently contribute significantly to the inaccuracy of atomic clocks. Because nearly all collisions with room-temperature background gases that transfer momentum eject the cold atoms from the clock, the ...

History of Atomic Clocks

open access: yesJournal of Research of the National Bureau of Standards, 1983
The history of atomic and molecular standards of time and frequency is traced from the earliest work on molecular and atomic beam resonance techniques to more recent developments that promise improved standards in the future. The various devices currently used as standards are discussed in detail from an historical prospective.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Magnetic field-induced spectroscopy of forbidden optical transitions with application to lattice-based optical atomic clocks

open access: yes, 2005
We develop a method of spectroscopy that uses a weak static magnetic field to enable direct optical excitation of forbidden electric-dipole transitions that are otherwise prohibitively weak.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Search for variation of fundamental constants and violations of fundamental symmetries using isotope comparisons

open access: yes, 2011
Atomic microwave clocks based on hyperfine transitions, such as the caesium standard, tick with a frequency that is proportional to the magnetic moment of the nucleus.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

On possibilities of improving the accuracy of the geocentric gravitational constant GM by combining SLR and atomic clocks measurements

open access: yesContributions to Geophysics and Geodesy
Nowadays, the geocentric gravitational constant GM is determined by solving equations of motion for trajectories of artificial satellites measured by Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR). The estimated value of GM and its uncertainty 398600441.8 ± 0.8×106 m3s−2

Competing bounds on the present-day time variation of fundamental constants

open access: yes, 2008
We compare the sensitivity of a recent bound on time variation of the fine structure constant from optical clocks with bounds on time varying fundamental constants from atomic clocks sensitive to the electron-to-proton mass ratio, from radioactive decay ...
