Ionic Precursors Transformed Into Vinyl Acetate Synthesis Catalyst via Reaction‐Driven Restructuring

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that a simple physical mixture of Pd and Au ionic precursors, KOAc promoter, and SiO2 support can transform into a highly active vinyl acetate synthesis catalyst through reaction‐driven restructuring. The results highlight reaction‐induced restructuring as an innovative and sustainable catalyst design strategy.

Functionalizing Micro‐to‐Mesoscopic Electrode Architectures for Regulating Electron Transfer Behaviors in Electrocatalysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A systematic review is conducted to assess the influence of electrode architecture across micro‐ to mesoscopic length scales on electron‐transfer pathways in electrocatalysis. We discuss the structure‐activity relationships in electrocatalytic applications, including resource recovery and environmental remediation, and provide cost‐effective, efficient

Te L-subshell x-ray emission induced by lower energy H2 + ions

open access: yesScientific Reports
The L-shell x-ray emission of tellurium induced by H2 + ions impact is investigated in an energy range of 150–300 keV. The blue shifts of various L-subshell x rays and the enhancement of the relative intensity ratios of Lι, Lβ to Lα x ray are observed ...

Imaging the kinetics of anisotropic dissolution of bimetallic core–shell nanocubes using graphene liquid cells

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Rational design of multicomponent nanocrystals requires atomic-level understanding of reaction kinetics. Here, the authors apply single-particle liquid-cell electron microscopy imaging coupled with atomistic simulations to understand pathways and rates ...

Spatially Regulated Lithium Plating via Li2O‐Rich Interphase Enables Durable Fast‐Charging Hybrid Lithium Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A Li2O‐rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is engineered on graphite through a propylene carbonate‐based electrolyte to spatially regulate Li plating. The homogeneous interphase lowers Li nucleation barriers, promotes conformal Li deposition around graphite particles, and suppresses dendritic accumulation, enabling durable hybrid Li‐ion/Li‐metal ...

Oyster Shell Protein and Atomic Force Microscopy of Oyster Shell Folia

open access: yesThe Biological Bulletin, 1998
The organic layers within biominerals often are viewed as sheets that may function in part to limit and define the underlying crystal structure, as well as to promote formation of the next mineral layer. Some insights into the nature of the sheets were revealed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) of surfaces of freshly cleaved fragments of oyster shell ...

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.
