Efficiency optimization for atomic frequency comb storage [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review A, 2010
We study the efficiency of the Atomic Frequency Comb storage protocol. We show that for a given optical depth, the preparation procedure can be optimize to significantly improve the retrieval. Our prediction is well supported by the experimental implementation of the protocol in a \TMYAG crystal.

Cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) behavior of organic aerosol particles generated by atomization of water and methanol solutions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) experiments were carried out for malonic acid, succinic acid, oxalacetic acid, DL-malic acid, glutaric acid, DL-glutamic acid monohydrate, and adipic acid, using both water and methanol as atomization solvents, at three ...

Efficient Teleportation Between Remote Single-Atom Quantum Memories [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2013
We demonstrate teleportation of quantum bits between two single atoms in distant laboratories. Using a time-resolved photonic Bell-state measurement, we achieve a teleportation fidelity of (88.0+/-1.5)%, largely determined by our entanglement fidelity.

Basis set construction for molecular electronic structure theory: Natural orbital and Gauss-Slater basis for smooth pseudpotentials

open access: yes, 2011
A simple yet general method for constructing basis sets for molecular electronic structure calculations is presented. These basis sets consist of atomic natural orbitals from a multi-configurational self-consistent field calculation supplemented with ...

Air assist fuel nozzle reduces aircraft gas turbine engine emissions at idle operation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1972
Reduction in unburned hydrocarbons from jet engine by use of air assist fuel nozzle is discussed. Operation of nozzle for improving combustion efficiency by improving fuel atomization is analyzed.

The limitations of Slater's element-dependent exchange functional from analytic density functional theory

open access: yes, 2005
Our recent formulation of the analytic and variational Slater-Roothaan (SR) method, which uses Gaussian basis sets to variationally express the molecular orbitals, electron density and the one body effective potential of density functional theory, is ...

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative
