With the exception of premature systoles, atrial fibrillation is the most common of the major cardiac arrhythmias. It may be an acute paroxysmal arrhythmia or a chronic established arrhythmia. Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation may last for only a few moments, a few hours, or a few days.
