Abstract The familial variant of cardiac myxoma is known to be an autosomally dominant disease. Early diagnosis, and removal of the tumours, are of great importance. In this regard, echocardiography is considered the simplest and most reliable diagnostic method.

Tumors that were identical in morphology to a previously excised atrial myxoma were found in the choroid plexus and the scapula of a 46-year-old woman 8 and 10.5 years, respectively, after cardiac surgery. Ultrastructurally the scapular lesion resembled previously reported atrial myxomas.

Familial and biatrial myxomas of the heart have rarely been described. We describe a familial atrial myxoma involving a parent with biatrial and a child with a left atrial myxoma. Atrial myxomas were diagnosed preoperatively by echocardiography and successfully removed at operation.
