The spinal cord is a clinically eloquent site for the assessment of neurological disorders, particularly multiple sclerosis (MS). After a short historical introduction to atrophy as measured from X-ray computed tomography images, this chapter discusses the merits of spinal cord atrophy, which is assessed using magnetic resonance imaging as a marker of ...

Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America, 1987
Urogenital atrophy in the postmenopausal or castrated woman is common with a multifactorial etiology and a varied clinical presentation. The effects of age and estrogen deprivation are, at times, poorly separable. Estrogen replacement may be used to significantly alleviate symptoms due to atrophy but must be used with appropriate surveillance to avoid ...

Survey of Ophthalmology, 1991
A young woman became suddenly aware of visual loss in her left eye. She was found to have optic atrophy giving chronicity to the disease process. A hypopigmented macule on her face along with neuroimaging studies suggested an inflammatory process. A biopsy of the skin lesion was compatible with sarcoidosis.

Current Opinion in Neurology, 1995
The past year has seen advances in delineating the clinical features, natural history and imaging characteristics of multiple system atrophy. The initiating pathogenetic mechanisms remain unknown. However, any aetiological or pathophysiological hypothesis must consider not only neuronal loss and gliosis but also the recently described characteristic ...
