Levels of leaf Herbivory in Amazonian trees from different stages In forest regeneration [PDF]
Leaves from 120 canopy trees and 60 understory tree saplings growing in primary and secondary forests near Manaus, Brazil, were collected for determination of standing levels of herbivory (percent leaf area lost).

Fungus‐farming ants cultivate fungus gardens for food. ‘Higher’ fungus‐farming ants, including the well‐known leaf‐cutting ants, cultivate domesticated cultivars that are clearly modified for life with ants. Here we show that the higher fungus‐farming ant genus Trachymyrmex consists of three different groups, one of which is the sister group of leaf ...

Behavioral differentiation and ovarian development of unmated gynes, queens, and workers of Ectatomma vizottoi were investigated in laboratory conditions. Forty‐one behavioral acts were identified and quantified for workers, 19 for queens and 24 for unmated gynes, for an overall species repertoire of 42 different behavioral acts.

Examining the Presence of Cronobacter spp. in Ready-to-eat Edible Insects [PDF]
Edible insects present a potential solution to increasing global food insecurity. However, there is limited research on the microbial hazards they may pose. These include opportunistic pathogens like Cronobacter spp. (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii). In

Trait‐Mediated Indirect Effects of Phorid Flies on Ants
This paper provides a synthesis of the ecological impact of phorid fly parasitoids on ants. We find the most important impact of phorids on ants to be trait‐mediated effects. Phorids diminish the foraging activity of ants, frequently reducing the number and average size of foragers and reducing the amount of food retrieved by a colony.

Intramandibular glands in different castes of leaf‐cutting Ant, Atta laevigata (Fr. Smith, 1858) (Formicidae: Attini) [PDF]
ABSTRACTIntramandibular glands have been poorly studied in polymorphic ants, where the differences between castes were unsufficiently scrutinized. Leaf‐cutting ants possess one of the most complex systems of communication and labor division, which is polymorphic well as age polyethism, and makes them an ideal model for the study of intramandibular ...
