Flight and substrate utilisation in laboratory-reared males of Atta sexdens
Journal of Insect Physiology, 1978Males of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens have been flown in the laboratory and exhibit maximal flight activity at 17.00 to 18.00 hr, 9 to 10 hr after ‘lights-on’. Flight tendency is also dependent on the ants being away from their nest for a short period of time and on the presence of other sexuals. The ants are capable of a free-flight speed of 2.63

Spectral efficiency as measured by ERG in the ant (Atta sexdens rubropilosa)
Journal of Comparative Physiology ? A, 1975Spectral efficiency of the worker ant ofAtta sexdens rubropilosa to light between 425 and 650 nm was explored by means of the ERG. A maximum response, is observed at 500 nm. Selective adaptation does not affect this maximum, suggesting the existence of only one receptor in this region of the spectrum.

Queen mating frequency and relatedness in young Atta sexdens colonies
Insectes Sociaux, 2000Queen mating frequency is correlated with mature colony size across monogynous ant species as a whole. However, recent comparisons between Atta and Acromyrmex leafcutter ants found an opposite trend. We tested whether this result could be reproduced for Atta sexdens, using a new Atta colombica microsatellite marker to analyse queens and worker ...

The leaf-cut ants are important agricultural pest, because they can cause intense defoliation in plants and destroy large areas cultivated. Although there are several works for the control of these insects by examining the toxicity of natural chemical compounds on various species of ants, few are focused on analyses of morphological changes caused in ...

Azadirachtin impairs egg production in Atta sexdens leaf-cutting ant queens
Environmental Pollution, 2018Leaf-cutting ants are important pests of forests and agricultural crops in the Neotropical region. Atta sexdens colonies can be composed of thousands of individuals, which form a highly complex society with a single reproductive queen. Successful control of this species is achieved only if the queen is affected.

The intramandibular gland of leaf-cutting ants (Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel 1908)
Micron, 2006The eusociality developed in Hymenoptera and Isoptera is driven by an efficient interaction between exocrine glands and jointed appendages, both in close interaction with the environment. In this context, the mandible of ants plays an important role, since, in addition to being the main jointed appendage, it possess glandular functions.

Pathogenic nature of Syncephalastrum in Atta sexdens rubropilosa fungus gardens
Pest Management Science, 2016AbstractBACKGROUNDLeaf‐cutter ants are considered to be a major herbivore and agricultural pest in the Neotropics. They are often controlled by environmentally persistent insecticides. Biological control using pathogenic fungi is regarded as an alternative for the management of these insects.

Empfindlichkeit der Blattschneiderameise, Atta sexdens L., gegen Giftgase
Zeitschrift für Angewandte Entomologie, 2009Zusammenfassung. 1.

Leucoagaricus gongylophorus provides protection for Atta sexdens against plant extracts
