Stop paying attention to “attention”

WIREs Cognitive Science, 2021
AbstractConceptual fragmentation is when a term assumed to have one meaning is found to have many. When these different definitions overlap in meaning and application confusion and wasted effort follows. “Attention” is such a fragmented term. The response to conceptual fragmentation is simple. Stop using the original term.

EEG-Based Emotion Recognition via Channel-Wise Attention and Self Attention

IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing, 2023
Emotion recognition based on electroencephalography (EEG) is a significant task in the brain-computer interface field. Recently, many deep learning-based emotion recognition methods are demonstrated to outperform traditional methods.

Forms of Attention and Attentional Disorders [PDF]

open access: possibleSeminars in Speech and Language, 2002
Difficulties in attention or concentration are observed in many clinical syndromes. Cognitive studies of normal attention and neuropsychological studies of brain dysfunction indicate that attention reflects a variety of mechanisms. These processes include the startle response, the orienting response, selective attention, vigilance, and divided ...

A Model of Saliency-Based Visual Attention for Rapid Scene Analysis

IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 1998
A visual attention system, inspired by the behavior and the neuronal architecture of the early primate visual system, is presented. Multiscale image features are combined into a single topographical saliency map.

Attention to Attention

Organization Science, 2011
Organizational theory and research has increased attention to the determinants and consequences of attention in organizations. Attention is not, however, a unitary concept but is used differently in various metatheories: the behavioral theory of the firm, managerial cognition, issue selling, attention-based view, and ecology. At the level of the brain,

Neural mechanisms of selective visual attention.

Annual Review of Neuroscience, 1995
The two basic phenomena that define the problem of visual attention can be illustrated in a simple example. Consider the arrays shown in each panel of Figure 1.

Behavioral inhibition, sustained attention, and executive functions: constructing a unifying theory of ADHD.

Psychological bulletin, 1997
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) comprises a deficit in behavioral inhibition. A theoretical model is constructed that links inhibition to 4 executive neuropsychological functions that appear to depend on it for their effective execution: (

PraNet: Parallel Reverse Attention Network for Polyp Segmentation

International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, 2020
Colonoscopy is an effective technique for detecting colorectal polyps, which are highly related to colorectal cancer. In clinical practice, segmenting polyps from colonoscopy images is of great importance since it provides valuable information for ...

Attention in flux

Neuron, 2023
Selective attention comprises essential infrastructural functions supporting cognition-anticipating, prioritizing, selecting, routing, integrating, and preparing signals to guide adaptive behavior. Most studies have examined its consequences, systems, and mechanisms in a static way, but attention is at the confluence of multiple sources of flux.

The attention system of the human brain.

Annual Review of Neuroscience, 1990
Illustration de trois fonctions principales qui sont predominantes dans l'etude de l'intervention de l'attention dans les processus cognitifs: 1) orientation vers des evenements sensoriels; 2) detection des signaux par processus focal; 3) maintenir la ...
