The Collective Power of Bacteria as a Blueprint for Emergent Intelligence

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Small cells, powerful collectives. Bacteria demonstrate how sophisticated behaviors can emerge from many simple individuals working together. We explore the remarkable world of bacterial communities and the mechanisms that underpin their complex emergent behaviors, enabling impressive adaptability, robustness, and responsiveness to changing ...

Effects of Background Music on Attentional Networks of Children With and Without Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Case Control Experimental Study

open access: yesInteractive Journal of Medical Research
BackgroundTo sustain performance during a task that requires attention may be a challenge for children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which strongly influences motivation for tasks and has been connected to ...

Bronchoscope Tip Localization With Learned Airway Constraints and an Open Source Simulator

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
BronchoLoc addresses feature‐poor bronchoscopic imaging by combining monocular video with a preoperative CT graph to estimate 3D camera location. A local tracker identifies candidate branches, while a sequence‐aware global module refines the trajectory. Demonstrating sub‐centimeter accuracy across synthetic and phantom datasets, this framework advances

Evaluating Cognitive Performance of Executive Control Based on Evidence from Attention Network Test and Event-Related Potential in Individuals with Mild Depressive Disorder and Burnout

open access: yesطب کار, 2022
Introduction: One of the secondary consequences of burnout is a significant reduction in cognitive functions, the most obvious and important of which is the cognitive function of attention and control, which can play a vital role in efficiency and ...

Enhancement of object detection with transcranial direct current stimulation is associated with increased attention

open access: yesBMC Neuroscience, 2012
Background We previously found that Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) improves learning and performance in a task where subjects learn to detect potential threats indicated by small target objects hidden in a complex virtual environment.

The effect of considering eye movement time in evaluating the efficiency of attentional networks

open access: yesPsyCh Journal
The attention network test (ANT) is a tool for assessing the executive, alerting, and orienting components of attention. However, conflicting findings exist regarding the nature and correlation between attention networks.

Multi‐method analysis for the three‐dimensional reconstruction of muscle fascicles from DiceCT datasets

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Muscle architecture is a major determinant of muscle performance and, in mammalian lineages, has been correlated with both feeding ecology and locomotor behaviors. Over the past decade, contrast‐enhanced micro‐CT (DiceCT) has emerged as an alternative to traditional dissection‐based measurement.

Ant Diversity of the Xisha Islands: Community Structure, Exotic Species Colonization, and Ecological Functions in a Tropical Coral Archipelago

open access: yesBiological Diversity, EarlyView.
The first inventory of ants from the Xisha Islands of the South China Sea was compiled, revealing 21 species: 70% native and 30% exotic. Anthropogenic disturbance primarily drove exotic colonization, whereas island area showed weak positive effects on species richness. Most ants were omnivorous, with key mutualistic and seed‐dispersal roles.

Animal empathy reconsidered: a multidimensional profile account

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Empathy is the glue that holds societies together and yet several fundamental questions about empathy persist. What is empathy (the definitional question)? Is it uniquely human and, if not, which nonhuman animals possess empathy (the distribution question)? Which type or quality of empathy is realized in different species (the quality question)
