Attitudes are settled or fixed ways of responding to people and objects in the environment. They involve what people know or believe and what they feel, as well as what they say and do. Attitudes can be stuck in a rut or can change in response to new experiences or persuasion.

Analyses of attitude consistency have usually operationally defined consistency in terms of high statistical association between questionnaire items. For a variety of statistical reasons researchers have avoided subject areas where such consistency is likely or, if these areas are investigated, the results tend to be misleading.
