Forced Attraction?

Problems of Post-Communism, 2017
The “Bolotnaya” protests of 2011–2013 and the ongoing Ukraine crisis have brought to the forefront of Russian politics an increased preoccupation with soft power. Official discourse and directives seek to both avoid risks and exploit opportunities in using soft power toward state ends. This dichotomous approach to the “power of attraction” demonstrates

Model for an attractive feeble force

Physical Review D, 1989
We present an economical and technically natural model for a scalar feeble force. The scalar couples to ordinary quarks and leptons only through mixing with the ordinary Higgs boson of the standard model. There is therefore a definite prediction for the composition dependence of the force, as well as the qualitative prediction that the physical Higgs ...

Myeloperoxidase attracts neutrophils by physical forces

Blood, 2011
AbstractRecruitment of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) remains a paramount prerequisite in innate immune defense and a critical cofounder in inflammatory vascular disease. Neutrophil recruitment comprises a cascade of concerted events allowing for capture, adhesion and extravasation of the leukocyte.

Nucleon size and the attractive nuclear force

Physical Review C, 1987
That the size of a nucleon increases when bound is shown to follow in first order from the attractive nature of the binding potential. We give two simple demonstrations of the connection of size change with the sign of the external potential, the generality of which helps to connect a wide class of successful explanations of medium modifications of the

An attractive force in metastasis

Nature, 2001
In breast-cancer patients, secondary tumours often form in the lungs and bone marrow, for example, but rarely in the kidneys. The explanation for this bias involves soluble attractant molecules called chemokines.

Roles of the attractive and repulsive forces in atomic-force microscopy

Physical Review B, 1991
We present a calculation of the attractive (van ver Waals) forces that are to be expected between tips and samples in experiments using atomic-force microscopes and scanning tunneling microscopes, and we discuss the important roles that these attractive forces, and their repulsive counterparts, play in the experiments.

Molecular Attractive Force in Small Cavities

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1985
In cavities of simple shape inside a dielectric, the molecular attractive forces are studied in the Drude-Lorentz model of molecule, by assuming the dielectric function of the medium to be of the single-resonance type. The retardation effect is neglected in view of pores of very small size.
