Estimation of Cancer Burden Attributable to Infection in Asia

open access: yesJournal of Epidemiology, 2015
Background: Some infectious agents have been shown to be human carcinogens. The current study focused on estimation of cancer burden attributable to infection in different regions of Asia.

Cancer burden attributable to human papillomavirus infection by sex, cancer site, age, and geographical area in China

open access: yesCancer Medicine, 2020
Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) attributable cancer burden is currently unknown in China, which is essential to evaluate the potential benefit of existing HPV vaccines and to inform cancer control policy.

Attributable Risk Function in the Proportional Hazards Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
As an epidemiological parameter, the population attributable fraction is an important measure to quantify the public health attributable risk of an exposure to morbidity and mortality.

The population impact of common mental disorders and long-term physical conditions on disability and hospital admission [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background: Long-term physical conditions (LTCs) consume the largest share of healthcare budgets. Although common mental disorders (CMDs) and LTCs often co-occur, the potential impact of improved mental health treatment on severe disability and hospital ...

Attributable fraction functions for censored event times

open access: yesBiometrika, 2010
Attributable fractions are commonly used to measure the impact of risk factors on disease incidence in the population. These static measures can be extended to functions of time when the time to disease occurrence or event time is of interest. The present paper deals with nonparametric and semiparametric estimation of attributable fraction functions ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

The population-attributable fraction for time-dependent exposures and competing risks - A discussion on estimands

open access: yes, 2019
The population-attributable fraction (PAF) quantifies the public health impact of a harmful exposure. Despite being a measure of significant importance an estimand accommodating complicated time-to-event data is not clearly defined.

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Crosstalk between the ribosome quality control‐associated E3 ubiquitin ligases LTN1 and RNF10

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of the E3 ligase LTN1, the ubiquitin‐like modifier UFM1, or the deubiquitinating enzyme UFSP2 disrupts endoplasmic reticulum–ribosome quality control (ER‐RQC), a pathway that removes stalled ribosomes and faulty proteins. This disruption may trigger a compensatory response to ER‐RQC defects, including increased expression of the E3 ligase RNF10 ...

Changes over 15 years in the contribution of adiposity and smoking to deaths in England and Scotland

open access: yesBMC Public Health, 2021
Background For many years smoking has been the major threat to public health in developed countries. However, smoking prevalence has declined over a period when adiposity has increased.
