We have seen that MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 Audio coders used perceptually shaped quantization noise as the primary tool for achieving compression. MPEG-4 High-Efficiency AAC [1] added parametric coding of the upper spectrum region with the Spectral Band Replication tool and parametric coding of two-channel signals with the Parametric Stereo tool.

Audio Compression (MPEG-Audio and Dolby AC-3)
1997CD-quality stereo audio requires a bit rate of 1.411200 Mbps (2 x 16 bits x 44.1 kHz). A single-speed CD-ROM can only transfer at a rate of 1.5 Mbps and this rate must include both audio and video. Thus, there is a great need for compression of both the video and audio data.
