Even in the quietest of rooms, our senses are perpetually inundated by a barrage of sounds, requiring the auditory system to adapt to a variety of listening conditions in order to extract signals of interest (e.g., one speaker’s voice amidst others ...

Not just heard, but judged: a multidimensional perspective on auditory attention in everyday life [PDF]
This review examines how listeners evaluate sounds in everyday contexts and how auditory attention research has approached this process. While experimental paradigms have yielded important insights into auditory processing, their constructs often rely on

Object continuity enhances selective auditory attention [PDF]
In complex scenes, the identity of an auditory object can build up across seconds. Given that attention operates on perceptual objects, this perceptual buildup may alter the efficacy of selective auditory attention over time. Here, we measured identification of a sequence of spoken target digits presented with distracter digits from other directions to

Measures of attention have been found to correlate with specific auditory processing tests in samples of children suspected of Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), but these relationships have not been adequately investigated.

Auditory attention detection with EEG channel attention [PDF]
AbstractAuditory attention detection (AAD) seeks to detect the attended speech from EEG signals in a multi-talker scenario, i.e. cocktail party. As the EEG channels reflect the activities of different brain areas, a task-oriented channel selection technique improves the performance of brain-computer interface applications.

Modelling auditory attention [PDF]
Sounds in everyday life seldom appear in isolation. Both humans and machines are constantly flooded with a cacophony of sounds that need to be sorted through and scoured for relevant information—a phenomenon referred to as the ‘cocktail party problem’.

Are acoustics enough? Semantic effects on auditory salience in natural scenes
Auditory salience is a fundamental property of a sound that allows it to grab a listener's attention regardless of their attentional state or behavioral goals.

Overriding auditory attentional capture [PDF]
Attentional capture by color singletons during shape search can be eliminated when the target is not a feature singleton (Bacon & Egeth, 1994). This suggests that a "singleton detection" search strategy must be adopted for attentional capture to occur. Here we find similar effects on auditory attentional capture.

The modern world is noisy. Streets are cacophonies of traffic noise; homes and workplaces are replete with bleeping timers, announcements, and alarms. Everywhere there is the sound of human speech—from the casual chatter of strangers and the unwanted intrusion from electronic devices through to the conversations with friends and loved ones one may ...

Transient human auditory cortex activation during volitional attention shifting. [PDF]
While strong activation of auditory cortex is generally found for exogenous orienting of attention, endogenous, intra-modal shifting of auditory attention has not yet been demonstrated to evoke transient activation of the auditory cortex.
